In my last blog, I discussed why diversity is becoming continuously important. Statistics support that a lot that needs to be done as India ranks 135 among a total of 146 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index 2022 of the World Economic Forum (WEF), falling behind Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

While the push for DE&I is growing and both the private and government sectors have made concerted efforts in recent years to support workplace diversity, Women’s labor force participation in India still stands at 22.3% vs the Global average of 47%.

However, efforts are being made in this direction and the same is highlighted in a recent report by nasscom which stated that DE&I is becoming a strategic initiative for India Inc just a nice-to-have initiative.

A dual survey-based report highlighted some interesting facts including:

  • D&I is becoming more of a part of the organizational culture and not just a consumer-facing strategy. Organizations are thinking about their employees’ collective experience and integrating DE&I into their organizations’ values and culture. They claim to be willing to go above and beyond what is necessary for a business to create a social impact.

  • Business at the helm of DE&I, taking the driver’s seat. It is interesting to note that the accountability for DE&I for over 60% of India Inc. is shouldered by the senior most business leaders (CEO/Business leaders), and not HR alone.
