Problem

According to AAAAI (American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology), there are around 300 million asthma patients and 65 million COPD patients all around the world and an estimated 250,000 deaths attributed to asthma and 3 million deaths attributed to COPD, cumulatively more than 5% of global deaths are attributed to Asthma and COPD.  Before we discuss the problems faced by asthma and COPD patients, a quick look at some facts can be helpful :

  • 3rd main reason for emergency department visits.
  • Costs ?480 billion annually in India.
  • Almost 90% of COPD deaths occur in low-income and middle-income households.

Many of these deaths occur because of the mismanagement of asthma. According to WHO,

Asthma cannot be cured, but could be controlled.

RespirON aims to help asthma and COPD patients to control their illness by using technology as a boon. It is a smart MDI to manage Asthma and COPD efficiently.

Solution

RespirON Inhaler is a smart MDI (Metered Dose Inhaler), which connects itself to the smartphone of the patient. There is a companion app which tracks the usage of the inhaler. The companion app also displays the information regarding the inhaler and the canister it holds, the puffs left, tips regarding the proper usage of inhaler, low medicine alert, etc.

The usage information is visually analysed and is shown in the dashboard (web and mobile app). There is a dashboard for doctors where they can see the visual analysis of the inhaler usage of their patients which would help them to treat their patients better.
