Vibration Sensor Selection Critical for Monitoring Machinery Condition

Vibration measurement is the most common method for assessing the condition of most machinery. Although advances have been made in vibration monitoring and analysis equipment, selecting and correctly installing the right sensors on a machine remain critical for successful implementation. Poor quality sensors and/or inadequate installation can easily give misleading data or, in some cases, cause a critical machine condition to be completely overlooked.

A typical sensor is designed to transmit operating information that can be critical for the safety of both the machine and the personnel operating the machine. Parameters such as temperatures, magnetic fields, vibration range, frequency range, electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrostatic discharge (ESD) conditions, and the required signal quality require a variety of sensors. Industrial companies need to identify the right vibration sensors/supplier to help ensure better machine performance and safety.

The most common industrial applications for vibration sensors include pumps, motors, fans, compressors, gearboxes, gas turbines, bearings on conveyor systems, wind turbine gearboxes, wind turbine generators, dryer sections (pulp & paper), ovens & kilns (mineral processing), and hot rolling mills (metalworking). Applications for vibration sensors will expand due to the increasing need to improve energy and operational efficiencies, growing infrastructure investments, and expanding emerging economies.

A key trend has been the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the desire to better understand the health of machinery and equipment to improve manufacturing operations. Manufacturers continue to battle the challenges of an aging workforce and operations moving into locations that are remote or lack access to expertise. Growing technical regulations and standards (globally, regionally, and nationally) drive greater complexity in product requirements.
