Digital engineering, as well all know, is turning out to be the transformational opportunity for the entire ER&D industry. Adoption of digital solutions is disrupting every industry, especially the ER&D industry. The industry is increasing making use of various digital technologies such as AI/ML, cloud computing, edge computing, IoT, RPA, blockchain, etc, for more and more activities.

Many ER&D companies are increasing their spend on digital engineering technologies and it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12% by 2025 globally. This is due to growing convergence of technology and business operations, technology-related transformations, and emerging business models to improve efficiencies, use of data-driven engineering and data monetization opportunities with access to growing volumes of data, and expansion of global digital ecosystem with growth of start-ups and other technology vendors.

With increasing digitalization of engineering activities, there are some traditional engineering activities which might become less and less relevant as the time goes by.

Traditional engg

  1. Manual inspectionIncreasing use of AR/VR and automation is expected to significantly reduce manual processes such manual testing (including safety testing), product certifications, inspection management etc and while also reducing the time, effort, and time to market.
  1. Manual design and manufacturing processesUse of digital technologies is increasingly reducing manual input in design and manufacturing processes, while also improving efficiency and accuracy. Software such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation, AI-enabled generative design, and Computer-integrated Manufacturing (CIM) are being used extensively by organizations to become more agile and efficient.
  1. Predictive maintenance – Maintenance of machines and processes is not expected to be post-facto going forward. Many ER&D organisations are already using data analysis tools and techniques to pre-emptively detect anomalies and defects before they result in failure, and this is expected to continue in future in a big way.
  1. Connected and smart machines – With increasing proliferation of IoT and big data, many connected systems and machines are being designed, which constantly share data and interact with each other, requiring less and less human intervention going forward.
  1. Knowledge Management – Technical documentation and knowledge management is increasingly becoming easier and automated with the growing proliferation of sensors and in-component storage systems.

More and more ER&D organizations are shifting away from the traditional engineering models to digital methods. Moving forward, the ER&D industry is expected to witness even more digital transformations and disruptions across various all verticals and power the next surge of growth across the industry.
