Across the globe, many engineering companies are realising the benefits of cloud in their day-to-day operations and are fast adopting the same. There are many steps one can follow on the road to adopt cloud for effortlessly enabling key engineering activities.

  1. Move to the cloud for the right reasons – Enterprises must evaluate the impact on their time to market, scalability, and collaboration and then decide to move to the cloud, rather than just looking at the cost angles.
  2. Assess the current IT landscape – Companies must assess the current architecture to host engineering and manufacturing workloads on the cloud and also plan for the necessary infrastructure upgrades that comes with migration to cloud .
  1. Engage with a service provider – While many enterprises have the requisite know-how, it is still better to consult a service provider for a cloud migration road map. Enterprises must also leverage the provider’s integration and migration services for a faster go live. In addition, they must outsource the managed services for best in class technology and talent expertise.
  1. Gradually migrate existing workflows to the cloud – Enterprises must leverage the existing infrastructure and incorporate cloud elements into the existing infrastructure. They should also start managing workflows in an IaaS cloud model. In addition, it is advisable to migrate the PLM system to cloud because it is less complex and has low computing requirements.
  2. Plan to migrate most of the landscape – Enterprises must make a road map for gradual migration of systems to the cloud, plan for integration of design and production systems in a hybrid environment, and strengthen the security layers before moving the operational systems to the cloud.
  3. Adopt SaaS solutions across the spectrum - SaaS engineering and manufacturing application implementation and integration is expected to be the next big milestone. Enterprises must engage with the right ISVs to incorporate legacy customizations into the SaaS solution and maintain the uniqueness of their design and manufacturing systems. They must plan for major enhancements and upgrades while moving to a SaaS solution.

It is always better to thoroughly plan the migration of engineering activities to cloud in order to achieve a better hit rate.
