On 31st July, 2024 nasscom in partnership with Brookfield conducted nasscom’s July 2024 edition of Greentable which focused on:

  • Key Findings from nasscom’s sustainability report “Sustainability Playbook for the Tech Industry
  • Corporate Sustainability Priorities including Impactful Practices
  • Challenges that continue
  • Recommendations for Stakeholders

Interestingly the NCR roundtable saw participation from some non-tech industry leaders as well in addition to the tech industry leaders, both of whom validated the major findings of the report and discussed on similar lines. They also agreed that sustainability remains a key pillar for organizations, and is a now going beyond the supplier priority which has been a key ask from most of the global tech clients, to the FMCG consumers as well as employees specially the very aware Gen Z.

Apart from what they are doing the leaders also highlighted the areas which needs more attention from stake holders including:
- Net Zero Heat
- E-Waste management
- Best practices to address scope-3 emissions
- Green IT (Data Centre cooling which is creating new challenges)
Sustainability adoption challenges

Some of the newer best practices that were highlighted during the discussion in addition to what we have already discussed in my last blog “Greentable June 2024”which to make a big impact on the ground includes:

  • Sustainability Trainings
    • Some organisations are making these trainings mandatory for their employees.
    • They are also making it a key ask from their suppliers – focusing on the top 100 suppliers.
    • However, to make it as a mandate it is important to have the leadership as an anchor, else they remain a good to do effort.
  • Green Coding
    • Some organisations highlighted they have started working on project level dashboards for emissions which are accessible to clients, this helps both the organisation and the client to take the best way forward in terms of coding and use of AI.
  • E waste Management/ Circular Economy:
    • Recycling of laptops could be a good starting point for organisation
    • Incentives for using EVs and public transportation

Overall, for success on any effort it is important to communicate the impact across stakeholders so that it gathers momentum as well as acceptance at all levels in the organisation as well as across external forums. Also, the discussion needs to go beyond the board room to practical solutions on the ground.

Key Challenges:

  • Real-Estate Providers - Building  Fit outs and equipment are part of the scope 3 emissions, emissions from these fit outs over the lifecycle of the building (there are at least 5-6 fit outs over a lifecycle of a building) has more emissions than the building itself.
  • Tenants - Use of renewable energy in leased buildings remains a key challenge as companies have limited control over the energy related decisions, even pilots in this direction are difficult to implement. Property providers can look at this challenge at the establishment level
  • Availability of renewable energy across different cities is also a challenge, this inturn is effecting companies decisions with respect to new office locations
  • For EVs charging infrastructure and vehicle range remains a challenge; a future challenge could be recycling of batteries, though infrastructure support for the same is expected to be ion place in the coming years
  • First Mile and Last Mile connectivity incase of public transport, at times more commuting time.
  • Data for Scope 3 emissions remains a key challenge, companies are looking at data analytics and law of averages for the calculating the same.

Key Recommendations

Organizations -  Make employees as well as customer part of the sustainability journey

Real Estate Providers – Support organizations in implementing PPA (Power Purchase Agreements for renewable energy), currently the power suppliers lack knowledge on the same.

Trade Bodies

  • Support in Demystifying PPAs across key stakeholders including power suppliers, landlords/real estate providers, even organisations. There is a need to integrate the procedures at state levels, currently different states have different requirements which creates challenges specially when organisations are planning expansion.
  • Support more tech innovation in the country on waste management – as the next billionaires are expected to come from waste.
  • Incentives from government to use electric cabs currently the gap in CNG vs Electric is 20-25%, which makes it difficult to get management buy in from a cost perspective
  • Educational/Awareness programs as well as consortiums like the Greentables to share success stories.
  • Support Access to interactive trainings a lot of them are available for free but organisations are not aware. Also support access to quality third party content through skilling portals.

The above is a quick snapshot of the discussion while a lot more details on similar lines have been added in nasscom’s sustainability report. Keep following nasscom community on the subject as I cover some more details in my next set of blogs.
