Continuing with the discussion on the gig workforce across the technology sector from my last blog “Gig Workforce – The Tech Sector Story”, I would like to discuss the gig landscape in India which organizations can leverage for their various requirements.

The Gig Landscape in India

There is a diverse gig landscape available to companies that comprise of global gig platforms active in India which includes portals like freelancer, upwork, etc., as well as a number of Indian gig platforms that have emerged over the last couple of years such as FlexingIt, gighub, etc.

Moreover, Indian Tech companies have launched internal gig platforms to leverage the bench as well as specialized skills of their employees across a range of projects to maximize efficiency as well as meet the specialized skills requirements of the client. Moreover, some companies like Wipro had acquired a crowing sourcing platform topcoder which has an open global community of over 1.5 million developers and programmers.

The rise of this ever-growing landscape is in turn driven by the increasing demand for various skills across functions as well technology.

  • Pre-pandemic gig workers were primarily hired for Admin & Support and HR Roles. The disruption caused by the pandemic has led to organizations hiring Gig Workers extensively for Technology and Front-end Roles

  • In the tech sector owing to talent shortages and for cost-effectiveness, technology roles have emerged in addition to support roles for which gig workers were traditionally hired
    • For technology roles software development, data analytics, and UI/UX Design remain the most in-demand skills for gig roles
