Nasscom Insights in collaboration with JLL recently hosted a series of insightful industry roundtables on the topic “Future of Work in a ‘’No Normal’’ World” across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune.

Leading industry leaders exchanged invaluable insights on the topic with a deep dive on the theme "Workspace in a ‘Phygital’ World" revolving around some of the key questions including:

1. How are organisations redesigning their workspace to suit the emerging/new work environment?

  • Today offices are being repurposed for not only work but to create holistic employee experience as companies focus on the ‘return to office’ narrative. The priority is to make the workplace conducive for ideation, collaboration and open communication reflective of the organisation’s culture. It’s the place to build ‘social capital’ and unique experiences. Also, with flexibility being a key ask today the workplace needs to be agile. In a nutshell the overall purpose of a workplace relies on building the 4Es - Experts, Environment, Experience and Extension.

2. How are they maximizing ‘Techiture’ –Use of Technology and Architecture for a ‘happy’ workplace?

  • Companies are looking at technology as a key enabler amidst the changing work dynamics where flexibility is the secret sauce. Whether its tech to support flexible office structures, or varying working models from full-time office to hybrid to remote, or different time zones; tech solutions are a big support system for organisations looking to manage the ever-evolving employee requirements. Leveraging technology in all aspects of working has become even more important as the tech savvy Gen Z start to become a significant part of the tech industry’s workforce.

3. What are the steps taken to promote positive and inclusive workplace culture, physical & mental employee wellness, innovation & creativity?

  • Inclusivity, wellness, promoting learning and innovation has become very important today to drive positive people experience. With People experience at the forefront- Security, Fulfilment, Belonging, Curiosity, Identity, Attainment and Purpose, are the key seven lenses that matter the most in reshaping the same.

4. What measures are organisations taking to make the whole employee experience more environment friendly and sustainable?

  • ESG is a big ask today from all employees and specially the next-gen workforce which accounts for the majority of employee pool of the industry. Today organisations are making efforts not only to redesign offices and internal processes but are also looking at measuring the carbon footprint at the employee level and minimising, how can they relook at hiring to make it more inclusive, redesign offices to support diversity and inclusion and much more to make the workplace a ‘better place’.

The session also discussed the key findings from the JLL report “Is hybrid really working” including:

  • Organizations are striving to meet new expectations about where and how work is done, with many testing different hybrid work strategies.
  • A key hurdle in developing consistent CRE strategies is understanding and bridging the disconnect between what employers and employees expect from the hybrid model.
  • Employers who successfully balance their organization's culture, workforce, and industry needs have a deep, data-driven understanding of their employees' needs and redesign offices to boost engagement and performance.
  • While employees want to maintain flexibility with an average of 3.1 days in the office per week, employers are encouraging workers to return to the office, with 87% encouraging office work at least some of the time and 33% implementing some mandatory attendance.
  • Successful hybrid work strategies come from understanding what drives an organization's performance, acknowledging the needs of a neurodiverse workforce, and designing adaptable office spaces that reconcile flexibility, sustainability, and comfort.
  • Companies need to continuously assess employee satisfaction and the impact of changes to the hybrid workplace, identify opportunities for improvement, and create an agile environment that addresses evolving organizational needs.
  • Employers should set clear guidelines, or a “hybrid playbook”, around flexibility and use data-driven approach to optimize office occupation and experience.
  • Existing hybrid office models present challenges for employees, particularly when they are expected to execute focused work. The successful redesign of office spaces require data and a consideration of how physical space impacts performance and productivity.
  • There is a gap between employers and employees on what should be done in the office and what it means to be productive in a hybrid context. A successful hybrid should bring direct improvements in employee satisfaction levels and performance.
  • Encouraging on-site work involves investing in technology, amenities, office redesign, personal comfort, clean environment, and engaging social events. Introducing tools and policies supports remote work while enhancing the in-office experience.

These insights helped us in conceptualising this year’s edition of Future of Work 2023 report “Future of Work – Unravelling the Intricacies of New-Gen Work” which attempts to answer all these questions and much more.
