In the late 1980s, when Texas Instruments set up one of the first Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in India, the impact on the global tech landscape was hard to foresee. Initially, India was seen as a cost-saving destination for basic tasks. However, the evolution of GCCs in India has been nothing short of revolutionary.

Karthik Padmanabhan, Managing Partner at Zinnov, reflects on this transformation: “I always like to tell the story of the first adventurer, Texas Instruments, that came way back in the late eighties. There is a famous picture of them carrying a dish antenna on a puller cart to just place it over their center. So, starting from days such as that to now where, you know, we are able to set up GCCs within like three months or four months. I think this is the ecosystem and the infrastructure has evolved significantly.”

From these modest beginnings, the GCC ecosystem in India has grown exponentially. Today, over 1,700 GCCs are driving significant innovation and global change, far surpassing their initial cost-saving roles. Companies like Philips and Saint-Gobain are leveraging Indian talent for complex engineering and cutting-edge research. Indian GCCs are not only developing critical technologies but also taking on global managerial roles and spearheading major digital transformations, as seen in the success of Falabella’s Catalyst platform.

The future of Indian GCCs looks promising as they move towards full-scale manufacturing and commercialization, with potential growth in high-tech sectors such as semiconductors and defense. This shift will enhance their value proposition and contribute to India's economic growth and technological self-reliance.

Additionally, the rise of global leaders from Indian GCCs—over 6,500 in global leadership roles—highlights the maturation of the GCC ecosystem. These leaders are not just executing tasks but shaping strategies and driving innovation on a global scale. As India’s GCCs continue to evolve, they are poised to further influence the global tech landscape, demonstrating that the best is yet to come.
