We live where we work, and for NASSCOM members in the United States that means we want to see our communities thrive. When our communities thrive, there’s a direct correlation with job growth and a healthy economy.

Wipro, a leading global information technology, consulting and business process services company and NASSCOM member, announced this week the expansion of the Wipro Science Education Fellowship (SEF) program. Thanks to Wipro, starting in August three new universities in the United States (Stanford Graduate School of Education, University of South Florida, and University of Missouri) will train a total of 180 Fellows over the next three years. They join previous participants including the University of Massachusetts Boston, Mercy College, Montclair State University, Michigan State University, and the University of North Texas at Dallas.

This effort hopes to nurture excellence in science education in public school systems through teacher training. The Wipro Science Education Fellowship Program trains teachers to build leadership skills and teaching excellence within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields through partnerships with university experts. The result is an enriching experience for teachers in under-funded K-12 school districts in local areas where Wipro operates.

The process to select the participants is rigorous – Wipro will identify 20 science teachers each year to participate. That’s a total of 180 fellows over the three years! Each teacher will undergo 250 hours of intense training that will continue in their own classrooms. They will be encouraged to take what they learn into their communities and to share it with fellow educators which will amplify these skills to thousands more. After completing the program, teachers become part of the STEM Urban Learning & Leadership Community which seeks to deliver positive outcomes for urban students interested in STEM.

This inspiring program is funded entirely by Wipro and is in line with the goals of all NASSCOM members which provide much needed services to U.S. based companies. Specifically, that goal is to help prepare American workers to fill the skills gap that continues to expand as American businesses adapt to changing technology and business models. It’s yet another way NASSCOM is working with American institutions, businesses, and communities to grow jobs together.
