The world is gripped with the COVID-19 crisis which has shown the medical industries, about the failures and lack of response that is present in many countries. While the largest economies and the richest of the states could not help stop the virus, the firm ambitious startups of the medical sectors have taken the flag to lead the world in fighting COVID-19. In this effort, technology and marketing have been like the sword and shield of these startups.

The one major fact that makes these startups stand out of the mainstream race is their approach to the crisis. They do not follow the “black and white” rule of going with the traditional methods. They tend to have developed the “Hybrid Model” that has taken over the world with a storm. It is not only about being online or offline, it is a mix of both that is in the power play. GoMedii, for example, has taken the model to the next level involving various stakeholders in the account.

India, in particular, is boosting up the spirit of startups being the sole leaders of the fight. How? The Indian Prime Minister, in his most recent speeches of extending the lockdown, had very descriptively mentioned the concept of “AatmNirbhar” which meant self-reliance. This concept works perfectly with the startup culture all over the world. These small initiatives might not have very accomplished results in their track and are definitely too small to fight the COVID-19 on their own, they however have a better chance to lead the fight.

The major backbone to their success is the range of expertise that they involve themselves in. They are not just the health care provider per se, they are also medicine fulfillment agencies. They tend to establish a lot of things that the traditional supergiants because of the established name might not venture in. The ideas like Virtual Pharmacies are yet to be thought about by the bigger players whereas the startups are already rolling their dices over it.

The one very important aspect which most of the startups are not realizing is that the risk taken is a bigger boon of the future. “Calamity leads to creativity,” is the aptest slogan to be narrated and chanted here. Let us take an example of India, which has re-inforced the idea of self-reliance through its ideas already.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, he directed young Indian innovators and entrepreneurs to build solutions that embody the Indian spirit without depending upon international companies for ventilators, PPE kits, and more.

Over the last decade, Indian entrepreneurs have shown their resilience and deeper understanding of India’s on-ground problems that can be best understood through the lens of our own cultural perspective. Entrepreneurs currently trying to build their businesses have to understand how the pandemic is going to shift user behavior in the future and adapt.

While the pandemic derailed several sectors including travel and tourism this year, other areas — such as e-commerce, digital payments, remote work, online learning, and health-care technologies — have seen a positive impact. This aspect must not be overseen. It is a good sign and the beneficiaries of it will be none other than the startups!

The silver lining in this is also the recent news of the 30 startups from India who have provided ideas and technologies which the giants would be reluctant to indulge themselves in. The 30 startups or “Stars For Impact” have a common goal – build low-cost, portable, simple yet innovative, and accessible solutions for India, and India. These startups are embodying the true spirit of the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, coming up with out-of-the-box solutions to fight the pandemic.

Pune-based Serum Institute is developing a candidate suggested to it by an American synthetic biology company Codagenix, which has suggested an algorithm to find out the viral genetic sequence that could serve as a vaccine. In other words, there are two distinct parts to developing a vaccine now. The traditional method of developing a vaccine from a virus with attenuated potency or chunks of its protein sufficient to create anti-bodies, and the novel one of synthesizing a virus with the appropriate genetic sequence arrived at using algorithms.

The above-mentioned cases make the startup culture more dynamic and drive the hope for a better future. It only makes things look better for startups to emerge as leaders which think and take measures for normality out of the box. It is only the future to decide how and in which ways the startups will mold themselves to adjust to building demand of ways to handle this pandemic.
