Work from home- The other side of coin!
Work from home- The other side of coin!

Imagine: Your office chair is your couch. Your commute is the length of your hallway. Your snack drawer is your entire pantry. Think it’s a dream? Not these days when we’re all learning how to live with the reality of coronavirus.

Coronavirus has already been declared a pandemic and is spreading like wild fire! In order to prevent the business from suffering losses, organizations are asking the employees to work remotely from their place.

When we think of this whole work from home concept, what usually comes to our mind is that it saves time and energy and it usually increases the productivity. Increase in the productivity can be due to the time that is being saved by working from home or the employee feels more comfortable and relaxed while working at home.

But,

Does work from home always lead to increase in productivity?

There’s research on that, and it suggests that working from home actually makes you better at some tasks, and worse at others.

For instance, a 2012 study found that people performed “dull” tasks better in a controlled cubicle setting than they did in a less-structured remote environment.

The reason? If you’re in a less-structured environment, but you’re faced with a boring assignment, ordinary distractions (like walking your dog, doing your laundry or watching TV) seem more interesting, so naturally your focus gets shifted from your work to other things.

Productivity can also suffer, but not for the reasons you might think.

When a team works from home, everyone contributes less (even those in the office), simply because they believe they’re going to be less productive. There’s a sort of “free rider” affect: Nobody wants to be the one person still performing while others try to coast on their hard work.

Apart from these, work from home can also take a toll on the mental health of employees as they lose the companionship. This is because at workplace when one is with his/her colleagues, an employee can get support and help from the colleagues and there is a sense of solidarity. This is usually not the case when an employee is working from home being far away from other people.

Conclusion

Everything has its own pros and cons. In this difficult time it is indeed necessary to stay at home and protect ourselves from the deadly coronavirus. The solution to the loss of productivity can be that the employees should be honest and work with as much dedication as they would do while being at their workplace!
