Given the health concerns due to Covid-19, more than 90% of the employees of the Technology industry are working from home. However, a small proportion of them, like the personnel employed in the eCommerce industry and employees of Data Centers, have been working on the field risking their safety and health to ensure certain essential services are not disrupted. The very nature of their tasks does not allow them to be performed remotely.

E-Commerce

From the onset of the pandemic last year, the eCommerce / online channels have played a significant role in enabling supplies to citizens in a safe manner. Home delivery of goods and services has minimised the number of people stepping out of their homes, complementing the Government in its effort to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Though these eCommerce/ online channels have been taking all necessary precautions to ensure deliveries are safe, vaccinating all personnel working in the ecommerce industry (including employees/workers of third-party logistics partners) will further minimise safety risk, enhance the trust of the consumer and reduce the number of people stepping out of their homes in the near future. This will also ensure safety for these employees/workers, who have all along risked their health and lives to ensure supply of goods and services necessary for the public.

Data Centers

Similarly, Data Centers (DCs) are expected to function 24X7 as they host critical data, including applications and websites of government agencies, hospitals, banks, financial institutions, media, telecom companies and many other businesses that provide essential services to the citizens. Given this critical nature, employees of DCs have been working from the office premises through the pandemic, in spite of the safety concerns, to ensure their clients can continue to provide their services. Vaccination of these employees will help ensure these DCs continue to function without disruption and also address their safety concerns.

In view of the above, we have requested various State Governments that the following employees/workers should be considered as Frontline Workers for the purpose of vaccination.

  1. eCommerce industry (workers who are required to be in field, like delivery executives, personnel who are required to come to offices including warehouses etc.) and
  2. Data Centers (workers who are required to come to office on a regular basis)
