Promoting Women's Participation Needs a New Approach -3

Challenges continue to prevail for women in the tech industry, but we need to take appropriate measures to get this resolved and help women take a leap forward in this tech journey. Many policies and frameworks are being developed for this purpose, but they are failing to have a significant impact. Strong measures are required to push this to the next level. Some of the measure discussed in the women lead roundtable are:

  • Incentivizing and Recognition: Whether you are at home or outside, work can be done from anywhere, but what is required is the recognition of the work. Many women who are working as freelancers or in the backend are struggling to get the limelight due to their capabilities not getting the deserving limelight. We need to recognise and highlight such women in whichever industry or work they are doing. If their work is creating an impact, it should be properly "recognized." Through these awards and recognition, we can highlight the outstanding work of women, which can serve as an inspiration to others.
  • Role Model: We currently have many female entrepreneurs who are role models for others. What is required is an increase in this number, which will aid in inspiring more women to enter this field.
  • Upskilling: The right skillset opens the door to multiple opportunities, especially in businesses like software products, which need a lot of soft skills to broaden their prospects. Multiple platforms like NASSCOM Future Skills and others can significantly help individuals to keep abreast with the latest technology and skillsets.

  • Right Mentorship: Right mentoring not only guides a woman towards her desired goal, but it also provides her with the necessary motivation to keep going despite setbacks. Mentoring women at work can also be very effective as it will be a push factor for them to move forward. We-Hub is a state-led incubator exclusively for women entrepreneurs in India. Established by the government of Telangana, the incubator has launched various projects for women entrepreneurs.
  • Corporate Involvement: Large corporations, being the major employers, need to ensure women's participation and, more importantly, make sure of their upskilling. Amazon India recently launched the AmazeWIT Circles programme to upskill tenured software development engineers.
  • Women's Lead Fund: Women's led funds can be initiated, which can be specifically for women entrepreneurs. Women could be founder or as co-founders in that start-up as a mandate to raise the funds.
  • Strong Community: A community comprising of ecosystem stakeholders who can work towards building women's participation and entrepreneurship. Organizations like NASSCOM and others are taking multiple initiatives to support women entrepreneurs. Through deeper engagement, the NASSCOM Tech.WE programme aims to empower, inspire, and drive tech women entrepreneurs across India to sustain and scale their businesses.
