The ‘Natural’ Leader
The ‘Natural’ Leader

Many ancient civilizations and religions have believed in the Trinity. Each one has had its own descriptions, but one thing common is the emphasis on the union of the three aspects.

I’m writing with a particular focus on one such interpretation - In ancient India, the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva represented Creation, Sustenance and Destruction, respectively.

While I’m not a religious person by any standards, I feel that these primary functions of Nature (and thereby, of human existence) were personified to help a common person like me understand that eventually it is about a sense of harmony in these three facets of life.

I believe that all of us have the three aspects of creation, protection and destruction as part of our elemental composition. Is it then possible that individuals have a predilection towards some of them? …This would lead to personality differences where some of us are subconsciously biased towards creating something new OR protecting and nurturing what exists OR challenging existing reality to make way for a new reality.

One big question at this point – If this could be brought into my day to day consciousness, does it still remain a sub-conscious compulsion OR can it be a choice I make? But that’s another line of thought ... I’ll park it for now!

While we could analyze many aspects of life with this Trinity lens, let’s bring it to organizations (firms / departments / teams) and their Leaders… All said and done, leaders are human first, and going by the premise that I’ve described in the previous paragraphs, they are subject to this predilection or subconscious preference.

I’ve had the fortune of working with and learning from some absolutely brilliant leaders. As I look back, the ones who were most successful were:

  1. Not successful in perpetuity– They were successful for a certain period in time.
  2. Successful when their predilection matched the ‘need of the organization’.

The ‘Need of the organization’ could probably be one of 3 phases in a continuous cycle, not necessarily in this order –

  • A Phase which requires creating, growing, developing strength, starting an ecosystem.
  • A phase which requires protecting what has been created, nurturing, sustaining, and capitalizing on strengths.
  • A phase which requires challenging the status-quo, destroying the existing reality, un-clutter, make way for clarity and maybe a new reality. This one naturally circles us back to point 1.

So, a leader whose natural predilection matches the need of the organization is naturally setup for success… And a true Leader would be one who has the ability to identify the need of the organization, and make the choice to Create, Sustain or Destroy current reality …
