Meet Nikita Shah from Credit Business Management team at Barclays sharing her professional journey and her return to work experience at Barclays after taking a break for five odd years. She says restarting your career after a long break is challenging but not impossible.

What were your reasons for going on a break?

I had to take a break for five odd years to attend for maternity and child care needs.

During your time away how did you keep yourself updated with the latest skills and knowledge? Around this break, to be in touch with the professional world and to maintain balance in personal life, I did part time research work at a leading management institute in Mumbai. During this phase, I also got back to financial studies by clearing CFA Level-3 and FRM Part-1. All this gave me some confidence to resume back my professional life and sharpen my knowledge.

Did you face any bias when you got back to work and how did you #Breakthebias? It turned out to be much more difficult than I had imagined. Out there, there is quite a lot of bias for people with a career break, more so for females, and most of the pre-break work experience is heavily discounted. While it may be fair from technical perspective, there is still value in experience, and that’s what I tried to work upon. Luckily, last few years have also been a phase where many companies are exploring the idea of recruiting returning moms, and I applied for some of them, including the one at Barclays. And finally, I joined Barclays as an Encore intern in PDS TCU team.

How has the restart helped you? It always feels good to refresh your skills and to restart your career that makes you more confident and stronger within.

Do you credit anyone for support on your restart journey? What helped was the understanding from Barclays to see the value of experience in such profiles, especially during the pandemic, and then actively supported them first in resumption, and then in progression of their professional careers.

Advice you want to give out to fellow restarters Restarting your career after a long break is challenging, but not impossible. With a strong support system of family and friends, and with dedication towards exploring the right opportunities, it is doable.
