5G: Charging India’s Power Sector

Power is one of the core sectors which will be highly disrupted with 5G technology. High security, low latency, network slicing, and the capability to integrate huge numbers of devices with the smart grid are the features because of which 5G will find numerous applications in the power sector. 5G will contribute to the power sector to get real time data, to increase system efficiency and to meet customer expectations.

Three major use cases in the power sector that 5G will drive are described below:

  • Smart Meters & Grids:
    • 5G enabled Smart Grid solutions can reduce transmission and distribution losses, peak load management and improve QoS, reliability & integration with renewable energy sources. 5G enabled Grids & Meters will make a $209 Bn contribution to Global GDP by 2030.
    • Smart Meter National Program in India aims to replace 250 mill conventional meters with AMI which provides a huge opportunity for 5G enabled meters in the future    
    • Ultra-low latency can help automate power flow switching, load management and voltage stabilization. Realtime data management through 5G will also enable flexible billing systems using two-way power flows. For instance- Jio has integrated energy utilities through sensors with its 5G SA Network for automating the entire value chain of energy management including distribution and consumption.
  • Remote Monitoring & Maintenance:

Digital workforce solutions such as AR/VR enabled through 5G will enable technicians to remotely monitor machinery and engage in maintenance activities ensuring better asset management and worker safety in times of hazardous conditionsEnergy production can be monitored across wind turbines, solar farms with smart sensors which can help in remote site inspection reducing service visits and preventing outages.

  • Connected Energy Stations:

Cellular IoT-enabled orchestration of EV charging stations will help support station monitoring and maintenance smart energy management. Connected Oil Refineries, Power Stations & Coal Mines equipped with sensors will be digitalized through 5G such that predictive analytics will help increase operational efficiency minimizing energy losses.

5G technology can be leveraged to meet the various challenges in the power sector. The energy management sector is having a lot of data sources and their number will only grow. 5G networks will be capable of handling this data keeping up with Industrial Revolution 4.0.
