Agriculture is a core pillar of India's economy, along with services and manufacturing, having contributed 16% to the national GDP and USD 420+ billion in GVA in 2019. Yet, there are massive opportunities to enhance both its productivity and profitability, and that of the farming community, with the balanced adoption of technology alongside traditional ingenuity.

NASSCOM Insights hosted an open discussion on “Digital Transformation in Agri Sector in India” on 4th June 2021. Moderated by Ramakrishnan M - Head, Sales Partnerships & Alliances, Intello Labs, NASSCOM Insights analysts - Reema Aswani - AI Research Specialist and Namita Jain - Research Practice Lead,  along with Yogesh Singh - Head, Partners, Alliances and India, Nihilent, decoded the potential of digital transformation in the agriculture sector in India through this discussion.

Emphasizing the need for technological intervention in agriculture as being a critical one, and that the transformation requires scale and speed, the panel touched upon some of the most pertinent questions.

How can AI transform the agriculture sector and how can we prioritize the right AI use cases?

  • Impact of the nascent but fast-emerging AI use cases, in the area of soil preparation, weather prediction, preventive action, quality control using computer vision
  • Need to marry micro data from an agri field with the regional/national macro data on weather, air, soil, rain and point-in-time market situation to draw intelligence
  • Potential of national-scale agri datasets in helping effectively utilize AI to draw predictive alerts

How can the right stakeholders come together to accelerate AI adoption in Indian agriculture?

  • Role of industry – both providers and agritech startups – in scaling up solutions
  • Role of governments in enabling access, awareness, and adoption
  • Role of financing mechanisms to boost credit flow

How does IoT play a transformational role in standardizing and transforming technology-based agriculture?

  • IoT’s critical role in helping capture real-time, error-free, field data and enabling context-based analysis
  • Role of emerging IoT solutions in end-to-end agri value chain track-n-trace and connected gari solutions
  • Potential to build low-cost IoT solutions integrated into basic farm equipment for easy availability

What should be done to make IoT solutions more accessible and usable for India’s farm sector?

  • Major gaps that exist between awareness and deployment of IoT solutions in the farms
  • Need for a collaborative, concerted approach to make end-consumers, the farmers, aware and educated about these technologies and the utility value
  • Local manufacturing push at a massive scale to produce and make a variety of IoT products available in India at a much lower cost than the import cost

The ideas exchanged during this discussion emanated immense optimism in the potential of technology, particularly the role of IoT and AI, in transforming India’s agri sector, with strong ecosystem support.
