At the recently concluded NASSCOM Cloud Summit 2021, among many other sessions & panel discussions, one session focused on the need for and importance of a partner ecosystem for the success of any cloud adoption/migration/transformation journey. The leaders discussed the crucial role that partners play in scaling cloud for customers, what should enterprises look for when selecting a service provider, the importance of understanding the customers' domain, their needs & challenges that they expect the cloud solution to address, concerns around public cloud and cloud talent.

I summarize the key highlights: Every cloud partner (hyperscalers, cloud service providers, system integrators) must be equipped to provide services around Strategy/Advisory, Operations, Change management, Governance and Capability Building: 

Scaling cloud

STRATEGIC/ADVISORY

  1. Define & design the entire cloud journey - Where do I start?
  2. Help formulate the Cloud strategy that is forward-looking, cohesive and tied to business outcomes
  3. Define business KPIs
  4. Have a thorough understanding of customer business (domain expertise)
  5. Bring the right set of partners to the transformational table
  6. Share best practices

OPERATIONAL: Bridge the gap between strategy and execution

  1. Understand and classify existing application landscape
  2. Identify and prioritize applications:
    • To modernize – where does the customer get the most value? 
    • To lift & shift, simplify, standardize
  3. Ability to migrate mission-critical workloads to the cloud
  4. Ability to simplify existing architecture, creating a common vocabulary across the organization

CHANGE MANAGEMENT

A shift to cloud calls for fundamental changes in the way we think, overhauling the way we work, scale business and deliver services to clients. This in turn for continuous training across the entire organization hierarchy - mindset change, reskilling, cross-skilling and upskilling of customer teams - CXOs, operational, sales & marketing, etc.  

GOVERNANCE

  1. To manage various heterogeneous systems, legacy data, data strategy
  2. Compliance & security and the digital governance framework

CAPABILITY BUILDING

  1. Training the customer teams - tech and non-tech - in working with and managing applications, collaborating across teams and with vendors & customers, etc. in a cloud environment

Conclusion:

While this is only an indicative list of things to look far, there is no doubt that strategic partnerships are central to the success of any cloud migration journey - make the best use of their Collective Intelligence. The right set of partners can bring in the right balance of benefits, cost savings, solutions to specific problems; can provide scale, resources & capabilities; and can enable business aligned innovation solutions.
