Below are some of the learnings from the panel discussion on “Preparing for the Dynamic Mobility Engineering Disruption” from the 13th NASSCOM Design and Engineering Summit held in Oct 2021.

 

The last 2 years have been instrumental for disruptive technologies in mobility, intensified by the Covid pandemic. The electric vehicle revolution has taken the world by storm and the global stock of EVs has crossed 20 million. The disruptions have not only been at the business model level but also at the product development process, manufacturing process. Apart from electrification, great strides have been made in autonomous driving, shared mobility, and digitization of mobility as well.

 

Why is this disruption happening now?

It is a combination and culmination of various things that has made it a global movement at this point of time. There is social acceptability and also due to the increased focus on climate change and sustainability goals by all countries, there has been an increasing need from all stakeholders to be a part of this technological change. In addition, there have been regulatory changes, which is further pushing the need for innovation in mobility and exploration of different technologies.

In automotive, connectedness, autonomous, shared mobility, and electrification is propelling the development of unique consumer experiences and technological advancements.

To continue to build new technologies many aspects have to be considered. First of all, the right people have to be onboarded to deliver. In addition, one has to explore newer ways to integrate new partners in the supply chain and have a more transparent supply chain including where the materials are coming from, what kind of technology is available and how to integrate them.

 

To continue to develop new technologies, how do collaborations and consortiums help?

Many engineering service providers work closely with OEMs and collaborate frequently with them to understand the requirements of the automotive industry, consumers etc. In addition, they also work with technology firms from a content service delivery and architecture perspective and industry leaders to understand the future demands and market. In a consortium, there must be open dialogue and rapid prototyping and proof of concepts and understanding on how to personalize customer experiences.

Extensive collaborations with multiple universities for exciting projects, getting the young talent interested in the company’s projects, processes etc. is also another vital cog in the overall process.

 

What is the future of mobility? What new technologies can one envisage in the next 5 years?

There are many technologies and concepts which are expected to remain critical in the future -  

  1. Electrification - All automotive OEMs and suppliers are fully committed to electrification and are continuously innovating towards the same. There is expected to be new battery technologies, powertrain technologies, which might come into play in the future. Efficiency of the overall vehicle is extremely important. Therefore, it is not just important to optimize the battery, but the entire car for efficiency and there may be new technologies which are expected to emerge in the future for the same.
  1. Acceleration of disruption in technologies will continue. Rapid developments in 5G, AI, cloud computing, electrification all are expected to vastly accelerate. Ability to go from data center to cloud to edge to connectedness into the vehicle is expected to continue.
  1. New business models will emerge which will accelerate personalization of a vehicle as per customer needs, increase in safety etc.
  1. Building an ecosystem where all stakeholders can contribute is going to be necessary. The industry will also witness a lot of non-traditional entrants in the automotive industry.

 

What are going to be the future trends in mobility?

  1. Global movement for sustainability will lead to a lot of innovations within countries and companies. Partnering with suppliers, data centres etc. who also believe in this cause is necessary.
  2. Energy efficiency of the entire car is also expected to be improved, not just the fuel or battery efficiencies.
  3. New standards on aerodynamics, light-weight materials, CO2 neutrality will be witnessed.
  4. Digitalization of methods, tools, processes, products, product lifecycle management will continue in the future as well.
  5. Collaboration with all stakeholders is necessary to come up with efficient products and processes.
  6. Integration between engineering and supply chain is extremely important, especially in the light of the current semiconductor crisis.
  7. Talent skilling in new technologies is necessary to keep innovating.
  8. Technologies – autonomous, telematics and digitalization are all expected to accelerate at a pace never seen before.

 

The world is changing at a rapid pace and more so post pandemic. Changes and disruptions in mobility are expected to continue at a much more rapid scale than previously envisaged. All manufacturers in the mobility space need to be prepared and ready for all scenarios. Anticipating newer demands and expectations of the consumers will be necessary for survival and continued success.
