Remote work has now become the default way business's function. But not everyone has been able to warm up to it. Many people feel distressed by the lack of in-person workplace interactions that characterized the pre-COVID era. But that is not all.

Plenty of professionals are experiencing weariness because of how remote work has annihilated boundaries between work and home. Just like them, the turmoil you are experiencing is perfectly valid and does not define your capability as an employee. On the contrary, it is extremely brave and competent of you to carry your weight despite bearing the discomfort that you get from remote work.

To help you keep going, we at PERSOLKELLY have some tips you can use to preserve your sanity and wellbeing. They are: -

Appreciate what you have

Before the pandemic turned remote work into the only viable mode of operation, working from home was perceived as a luxury. Professionals from a myriad of industries dreamt of skipping commute and having the ability to work from their home offices. So, despite the circumstances leading up to remote work’s mass adoption, it is still a luxury for many. In fact, there are talks of a hybrid model becoming the prevalent way business's function. Thus, part of preserving your sanity while working from home could be taking inventory of the positives out there. Imagine how a hybrid work model can free up time for you in the future when the pandemic goes away for good.

Reflect on past learnings

The world is reeling from the thrashing that COVID sent its way. Most of what people constituted as normal is still at a standstill. From a professional standpoint, you can think of work-from-home as a hiatus from the traditional model governing how corporations functioned. In other words, the world is running slower than usual, making introspection an ideal pursuit at the time. So, take some time out to reflect on past learnings, and ponder over how the way everything has changed has impacted you. Try to get to the roots of the unrest you may be feeling. You may even consider seeking feedback from friends and colleagues to deepen your understanding of yourself. All in all, use remote work as an opportunity to take a deep dive into your inner self and get as many insights out of your meditations as you can.

Invest in yourself

You will always be the greatest asset you have. So, do not think twice before investing in your growth and wellbeing. Here is how you should go about the same. Once you have assessed your life from a holistic standpoint, acknowledge areas where you want to improve. Thereafter, find ways to turn your desire to get better into tangible objectives. For some, improving their life could mean investing time and energy into a fitness routine. For others, it could mean seeking professional help to better manage stress or other impediments impacting their mental health. Along the same lines, most folks out there could benefit from upskilling and getting certifications that enhance their professional caliber. Essentially, viewing remote work as an opportunity to level up in life could assuage some of its mental and physical challenges.

Connect with colleagues

If our battle against COVID has taught one thing, it is that humanity’s strength comes from sticking together during hardships. We are all stronger because of the connections we foster and the people we care for. Acting off this sentiment can bring a ton of good for remote workers across the globe. Since we are no longer working under shared roofs, the lack of informal workplace interactions has somehow lessened the endearment we feel for our colleagues. To remedy this, connecting with them anyway is a great idea. So, engage in conversations with folks you work with and try to connect with them on a human level. Foster meaningful interactions that render your clarity about life’s purpose and try to extend the same outcomes towards people you converse with. Try to be candid and vulnerable in this endeavor.

Celebrate small wins

Life is all about finding the right amount of challenge for yourself. When things are too easy, they become dull and monotonous. When they are too difficult, they come off as taxing and overwhelming. However, there is one more thing you need to do after you find the right amount of challenge. You need to reward yourself for the small wins you grab. After all, these small wins are what compound with time and collectivize to become massive achievements. So, when working from home, appreciate yourself for conquering the little challenges that come your way.

Read and journal

Reading is an intellectually stimulating activity that widens your perspective of the world. Even when you read about things outside of your field of work, you develop new synapses in your brain. In other words, you come across new ways of thinking about the world. Though learning more about your field of expertise also has many upsides, reading in itself is a rewarding pursuit. The same goes for journaling. It gives you a medium to strategically paint your thoughts and develops your reasoning skills. Journaling also helps you get better at thinking on your feet as it forces you to access information and insights at will. Simply put, reading and journaling will help you approach everything around from a newer, deeper lens and can help ease your mind.

Know where the future is heading

No one anticipated that a development like COVID would surface out of nowhere and completely redefine the status quo. However, its aftermath is undeniable. There is hardly a part of the world that the pandemic has not impacted. In the corporate world, it has forced higher-ups to reevaluate if working from an office is the only way to attain optimal business performance. Thus, we may keep embracing remote work long after the pandemic is gone. Moreover, the business world is already brimming with discussions about a hybrid work model becoming mainstream in the future. So, you need to understand how you feel about where the future is heading. Analyse if you will be more comfortable sustaining remote work or would want to return to a brick-and-mortar office space.

Conclusion

The business world’s shift to remote work has been far from perfect. So, rest assured that nothing is wrong with you if you are not enjoying the way things are. However, there is not much else you can do other than making the best of the cards you have been dealt. Of course, we hope that reading this blog helps. And before we close off, here is another reminder that you got this, and you are stronger than you know.
