The second Covid wave has been devastating for India as cases have risen across the country and the healthcare infrastructure is overburdened with rising demand. The government – central and state, corporates, international governments, startups and more importantly the citizens of the country have all stepped up effort to support the needy.

The technology industry in India is a people first industry and is making all effort to provide adequate facilities for its employees to deal with the crisis. Employee response groups, helplines, tie up with healthcare providers, isolation centers in campuses or at hotels / hospitals, vaccination camps for eligible employees, information portals are a range of measures being taken by the industry. At the same time, companies are also contributing to the overall healthcare relief efforts in the country through donations, medical supplies, oxygen concentrators, mini healthcare centers and technology solutions where relevant. International technology companies that have large centers in India are importing medical equipment and supporting the relief efforts as well as driving advocacy at a global level to garner support for India. Technology startups are crowdfunding resources for medical supplies and providing support.

Companies have all prioritized the wellbeing of employees and where needed are providing them flexibility to recover from their own illness or be a caregiver to their loved ones. Empathetic leadership is the priority for the industry and companies have stepped up their communication to enhance awareness on dealing with Covid, access to resources and counselling support.

Over the last 12 months, the industry has been operating in a largely remote model and hence the current lockdowns have not created any business discontinuities for the industry. Advanced technology infrastructure and collaboration solutions are being utilized for delivering digital solutions. The employees impacted by Covid are being given flexibility and time off and team reallocation, work prioritization is being done to ensure critical timelines are met. Global customers have also been very supportive and have asked companies to prioritise employee health and are also partnering for relief efforts.

Technology led by digital solutions has become the foundation for all businesses and the technology industry in India continues to innovate with solutions, services and business models.
