Introduction

If you've been paying attention at all, you are aware of how important Big Data is. With the amount of data we must deal with growing significantly every day and the role of a data scientist requiring an advanced degree—90% of data scientists hold either a Ph.D. (49%) or a Master's degree—this shortage poses a serious problem (41%).

However, organizations are adapting and realizing that not every data role necessitates a highly qualified data scientist. The middle ground only calls for experts with the necessary training and skill set to handle particular tasks. The Citizen Data Scientist is a newly created position due to this. Forget about the data scientist being a big hero. No cape or advanced degree is necessary because the citizen data scientist is coming to the rescue.

What is a Citizen Data Scientist?

Even though the term has been around for a while, Glassdoor.com does not currently have any job openings for "citizen data scientists." This is due to the fact that it is more of a need than a role that an organization will hire for. Although the term "citizen" is used in the industry, those who are hiring are more concerned with the tasks that should be completed but aren't.

Besides a job title, what else is posted? A citizen data scientist is "someone whose primary job role is outside of statistics and analytics, but who creates models that leverage predictive or prescriptive analytics," according to Gartner. They bridge the gap between data scientists and business users who carry out self-service analytics. InformationWeek describes the character as being that statistics and analytics are secondary to the role.

Although there appears to be agreement regarding the abilities required and the tasks to be accomplished, it is still a new concept and is not yet clearly defined. The citizen data scientist, according to ARC's Mike Guilfoyle, has "data science skills like statistics, but not as advanced as a data scientist," according to a Forbes article. He says their duties include exploring new data, enhancing current models, and developing and deploying new models to gain additional insight.

What Motivates Businesses to Use Citizen Data Scientists

It is well known that there is a shortage of data scientists, and as businesses prepare for this shortage, they realize that not all job functions require a graduate degree. An alternative would be to train a citizen data scientist to complete tasks that are required but not currently being completed.

Organizations can make better use of data by reskilling or upskilling employees to fill these enhanced data roles, increasing access to and using that data and boosting competitiveness.

A job as a citizen data scientist may be the perfect fit for someone who wants to work in data science but is unable to return to college for an advanced degree, and certification may be the best form of education. But depending on whether you're already employed by an employer who wants you to reskill or whether you're setting yourself up for an entirely new career, there are a number of different routes you could go.

You have a wide range of options when deciding which certifications to pursue to prepare yourself for employment as a citizen data scientist. It's up to you whether you want to learn Python, R Programming, or Tableau. In order to determine which data skill sets are required for this new role, start looking at job postings at websites like Indeed and Glassdoor if you're making a lateral move and anticipate finding employment.
