The aviation industry in India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing industries in the country during the last three years. The industry  can be broadly classified as:

  1. Scheduled air transport service which includes domestic and international airlines,
  2. Non-scheduled air transport service which consists of charter operators
  3. Air taxi operators and
  4. Air cargo services.

Domestic traffic constitutes around 69% of the total airline traffic in South Asia and India’s airport capacity is expected to handle 1 billion trips annually by the end of 2023. Additionally, the Government of India has plans to increase the number of airports from 141 to over 200 airports by 2026 with an additional investment of 98000 Cr.

While the Aviation industry has fully recovered from the impact of COVID in terms of Air traffic, the pandemic had a deep impact on the aviation industry and made it imperative for it to get on the path of using technology to streamline operations, use data for real-time insights and have an action-oriented approach, however moving on this path is not easy. It requires investments of both time and resources and brings in its own set of challenges during migrations with risks of failure.

We also need to understand that Airports are not an island. They are part of a vast ecosystem that includes, airlines and various agencies that are all co-managing the passenger journey. All are necessary to deliver a seamless customer experience and not one single stakeholder can do it on their own. Agile Digital transformation can be one of the approaches the aviation industry can take but before we further dive into it, we need to understand what Agile Digital transformation is.

It’s an approach to take your business on the path of digital transformation that is based on evidence and continuous innovation around areas that impact your interactions and customer experience. This will allow businesses to come up with radically changing business models and capabilities in measured steps, over time, while not overloading resources. Flight Turnaround time optimization and customer experience are two prime business success matrices for the aviation industry.

Today modern technology changes are complex and are making it complex for business leaders to realise the possibilities of next-generation technology. The reason for this is simple, lack of transformation vision that will map out a digital strategy and more importantly, give the aviation business the ability to measure progress and make real-time adjustments to improve outcomes. Industry leaders need to create, articulate, and communicate a compelling future digital vision for the aviation business as a whole.

Aviation just like hospitality is an experience-oriented industry. Hence, in the constantly changing face of our modern times, the business needs to invest in digital platforms that will empower the company to service its clients via mobile apps, self-managed services, and virtual consultations, along with the storage of biometric consumer device data while gathering data that can be used to constantly improve their business operations. Another area of investment is using IoT and camera vision with AI to gain real-time insights around both airside and terminal-side operations.

Doing business in the connected digital space is becoming a norm across the aviation industry. Businesses can expose their products and services and benefit from a large distribution reach while knowing who they are doing business with and managing the risks associated with those interactions. The inherently robust security properties like integrity and immutability of Blockchain technology make it very suitable as the underlying technology for digital identity management solutions.

The commercial aviation industry is a highly complex space, where a large number of entities are involved in the delivery of travel products and services, which is sometimes manifested in a single product from the customer's perspective. These actors are often collaborating and partnering to be able to co-deliver value and meet the expectation of customers. From the moment passengers search online for an air ticket to when they arrive at their destination, the airline is just one of around 26 business partners involved in the aviation chain.

Blockchain allows airlines, travel agents, and others across the distribution space to collaborate while co-delivering travel products and services better. The anticipated changes could expand the distribution reach of all parties involved, and increase the efficiency of how travel products and services are aggregated. It also can move payment towards being more transparent, real-time and low-cost.

The aviation industry not only needs to constantly gather data but connect and visualize that data in a context that generates insights that can be acted upon. The key to unlocking real-time data intelligence for dynamic and unified customer engagement is understanding and addressing customer personas.
