This is the tenth of the multi-part blog series titled ‘DIGITAL ENTERPRISE TRANSFORMATION, INDIA PARADIGM’ and encapsulates the theme of Hybrid Work Models from the standpoint of adoption of Work-from-Home (WFH)/Work-from-Anywhere (WFA) models by Indian and Global end-user enterprises.

My previous blogs concentrated on the various aspects of DIGITAL TALENT HIRING, DIGITAL TALENT STRATEGY – BARRIERS & TALENT ATTRACTION/ RETENTION MEASURES and KEY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES AND DIGITAL CXO ROLES in India, setting the context for my present and forthcoming blogs focused on delineating the key highlights on digital enterprise transformation, from the perspective of Indian end-user enterprises. These insights have been derived from the NASSCOM-Avasant “Digital Enterprise Survey” conducted in May’2022. Based on the survey results, NASSCOM and Avasant framed the “The Digital Enterprise Maturity Index,” which is a key constituent of the “DIGITAL ENTERPRISE MATURITY 3.0: Boosting Business Resilience through Technology” Report published in July 2022.

KEY INSIGHTS ON WORK-FROM-HOME/WORK-FROM-ANYWHERE (WFH/WFA) WORKFORCE-MIX ENABLED BY INDIAN ENTERPRISES:

  1. Up till FY2021, more Global enterprises were adopting the hybrid/remote work model as compared to Indian organizations, but post FY2021, this trend got reversed.

Prior to FY2021, India was behind its global peers in the adoption of hybrid work models as the notion of the entire workforce working remotely was unimaginable due to infrastructure issues for remote working as well as a predefined work culture of working from a physical office-space. Hence, working on-premise was quintessentially the go-to work model for Indian enterprises. However, as Covid struck the globe, ~55% Indian enterprises enabled the WFH/WFA model for >40% of their workforce in FY2021 as compared to merely close to 10% enterprises adopting similar models in FY2020. Corresponding numbers in the global context were ~70% and ~25% respectively, much higher than those adopted by Indian companies.

In FY2022, with remote-work infrastructure becoming more formalized as corporates as well as employees began understanding the benefits of WFH/WFA models better, India picked up further pace and the number of enterprises offering hybrid work models to 40%+ of their workforce went up from ~55% in FY2021 to ~65%. Contrarily, globally, this figure dipped from ~70% in FY2021 to ~50% in FY2022, due to the opening up of economies and return-to-work policies.

While the actual numbers will be highlighted in our upcoming version of the Digital Enterprise Maturity Report which is on the anvil and will be releasing in the next few months, in FY2022, ~77% of the Indian enterprises indicated that they plan to adopt a flexible work model across sectors in FY2023, with more than 40% WFH/WFA workforce mix, as compared to ~68% of their global peers expecting to adopt similar trends in that timeframe.

Thus, with step shifts in employee flexibility demands, greater adoption of hybrid work models oriented towards a higher percentage of hybrid/remote workforce, is likely to be formalized and become the ‘next normal’.
