5G is expected to power the next era of digital connectivity, serving as the pillar supporting hyper-connectivity that brings together people, devices, industrial and physical ecosystems seamlessly through key technologies.

One of the key technologies in the mobility sector being explored is autonomous driving. Through the proliferation of 5G, autonomous driving is expected to pave the way for the future of mobility. 5G capabilities combined with AI and Edge computing technology are expected to enable wide use of Connected Cars with the potential to achieve autonomous driving in the future. Demand for 5G in automotive transport is predicted to rise at a CAGR of 26.5% from 2022-30. Penetration of connected vehicles in India is at 10% compared to 30% global revenue representing an opportunity for future market.

Through the use of 5G, vehicles can connect to cloud and provide real data on tracking. 5G also enables enhanced vehicular network communication as well as complete vehicle to environment communication, helping in making great strides in autonomous vehicles to become mainstream.

There are various applications for the stakeholders which can be then put to practice.

  1. OEMs - Vehicle performance, driver patterns can be assessed to optimize vehicle design by manufacturers and improve features.
  2. Vehicular insurance - Real time data can be used to monitor condition of vehicle reducing vehicle maintenance costs and provide insights to OEM and insurance players.
  3. Authorities - Local authorities can monitor location to streamline traffic. Accidents, detours, emergency vehicles can be better managed.
  4. Safety - V2X communication increases situational awareness between vehicles and elevates reliability and safety.
  5. VR-assisted driving and connected vehicles allow for remote operation of industrial vehicles in hazardous environments assuring safety.
  6. Other uses - Enhanced user experience through infotainment and V2I communication with smart homes and cities. Example: Hyundai Nexo SUV uses 5G infotainment system allowing users to control smart home devices from the road.

For India to become a digital economy, 5G is expected to play a large role in moving in that direction.
