In my last blog, I highlighted the what are the key challenges with respect to DE&I across organizations. Taking the same discussion forward I would now like to talk about how India Inc is assessing DE&I.

One of the key highlights that stood out across organizations is that gender diversity remains the key focus area, with differently abled and generational diversity being the two fastest-growing domains for diversity practices.

Notably, the low representation of marginalized employees in Indian organizations highlights the need for an intersectional, India-first approach to DE&I that recognizes and addresses the unique challenges faced by individuals with multiple intersecting identities such as caste, class, region, etc.

Moreover, despite gender diversity being the key focus the gender gap still remains high as the representation of women in organizations still stays low with only 20% of them reporting gender diversity of 40% and higher.

Also, despite organizations making efforts to ensure diversity at the board/leadership levels, the C-suite remains male-dominated.

PWD participation on the other hand remains tokenistic and the LGBTQIA+ representation has its own challenges with only 32% collecting data on the same, while 72% organizations claim to support the community.

Overall, to truly promote DE&I, it is important to adopt an intersectional approach that recognizes the complex interplay of various identities. While some progress has been made in terms of increasing the representation of certain marginalized groups such as PwD and the LGBTQIA+ community, there is still a long way to go to be more inclusive of members from other marginalized groups.
