On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Women’s Initiative @MakeMyTrip, Goibibo and Redbus team participated in the story contest ‘I Made a Difference’ for all its employees in India. Employees were invited to share their story on how they positively impacted or empowered a woman – a mother, sister, wife, daughter or friend.

The employees welcomed this contest with great enthusiasm and we received a good number of submissions. Out of the responses received, we selected the top winners; their story is below:

Story 1

Name: Richa Devi, MakeMy Trip

Topic:Took a social Stand against Discrimination & Abuse against Woman

I had taken part in a Pan India protest, during the Jyoti (Nirbhaya) Case in 2013 and also recently took part in ‘ We will go out’ campaign organized in Bangalore against molestation cases that took place on 31st December. I have also been part of several women empowerment causes promoted through motorcycle rally and highlighted one such case where a media channel in Assam, aired an episode portraying women in bad light. I brought this case to the notice of Women’s right group, Vimochana in Bangalore who issued an email to the Women’s Commission Branch in Guwahati to take effective steps to stem airing of moralistic, derogatory and anti-women comments in the media.

Story 2

Name: Shruthi S, RedBus

Topic: Supportive Manager/ spouse/ son/ father etc & Took a social stand

I lost my father at a very young age in a road accident. My mom was just 29 years and it was a terrible shock to the whole family. My mom got my father’s job and she started working as government hostel superintendent. Even though my dad was a Taluk Officer, my mom got this post because she had not completed her degree. We encouraged and supported her to overcome her fears about outside world and take up this job. She became busy in her work and she started learning everything about the outside world, she even studied further and completed her bachelor’s degree.

But at home she remained indoors most of the time and had stopped attending any functions. It was difficult for her since she felt society expects a widow to live a life of solitude. I could not accept this injustice and always told my mom to lead her life on her own terms and not to please the society. When she was in trouble and did not get help from those people, my mom started changing and she started attending functions. She started leading a normal life as she used to be before my dad’s death.

One day at a relative’s home, when one lady was giving kumkum and flowers to me and my mom, my uncle stopped her and said don’t give it to her she is widow. I really got angry and stopped him and asked if this was the case with one of his daughters would he do the same, and we left from there. I told my mom using kumkum, wearing bangles and flowers is a right of every women and convinced her for many years to get out of it. I gave my complete support to her, to do what she likes without bothering about others. She realized this and promised me that she will not tolerate such people from now on. I was very happy that day because she started living for herself from that day. Today my mom puts kumkum, toe rings, flowers without any hesitation.”

Story 3

Name: Seller Services Team, Goibibo

Topic: Helped domestic staff

Padma and the entire Seller Services Team helped Saba, who is a cleaning lady at the office, during the time of a personal crisis. Saba heard the news of her mother’s demise and needed a flight ticket to go back to her home town on the same day. Padma took this initiative to get the tickets done for Saba with the help of Sohil Sharma (AD – Flight Contracting). She proposed to her team, to contribute so that Saba does not have to bear the ticket cost at all. The whole team of 33 employees of the Seller Services Team happily contributed and Saba was able to fly back to her home town.”
