In the current situation where the globe is fighting a pandemic, emerging technologies seems to be solving for a host of challenges for the healthcare industry.

Emerging technologies helping during the COVID times

Artificial Intelligence: Canada based BlueDot caught the virus early using an AI algorithm, which looks at more than 100 datasets—including news sources, airline ticket sales, demographic data, climate data, and animal populations—to predict and track the spread of disease. It detected an outbreak of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China, on December 31, 2019, and identified the cities that were at the highest risk of facing outbreaks of their own.

Automation: The use of robots in hospitals have become a common scene across the globe.

IOT and Analytics: IoT technologies are helping with the data harvesting and analysis aspects of diagnostic medicine by using patient’s symptoms data from wearable devices alongside information from traditional hospital testing.

Beyond healthcare IoT can play a significant role in preventing the spread of COVID with smart home/office solutions which minimizes the common touch points for individuals.

Emerging Technologies continue to lead IP creation

A similar trend is being witnessed in IP creation by India domiciled companies which are filing patents in the US, as majority of the technology patent filing being done in emerging technologies.

According to NASSCOM’s recent report on Emerging Technologies: Leading the Technology IP Creation Bandwagon for India”:

  • Healthcare and Medical Devices remained the top application after software applications with most number of technology patents filing.

  • Emerging technologies accounted for ~ 60% of the technology patents in 2018/19 with AI leading in terms of the maximum number of patents filed, while cloud computing took the top spot in terms of growth

  • Interestingly, Software Applications, Health and Medical Devices, and Industrial Applications find majority application of patents in emerging technologies; with Healthcare and Medical devices retaining the top slot in IOT patents.

Overall, the current crisis have further intensified the research and development focus on healthcare which will further support increased innovation and IP creation in the segment, and emerging technologies will continue to witness increased application across the healthcare spectrum!
