Workforce style is changing very fast which is not only impacting office environment but also society and economy at large. Since beginning of 2020, organisations have been continuously experimenting to find different models of operating with work force so that it is mutually not only beneficial, but rewarding as well.

Till 2019, workforce always had a schedule - go to office, work for 8-10 hrs, use breaks to have work / personal conversations with peers and colleagues, build stronger relationships with like minded people. All this kept the energy and motivation high amongst the workforce.

And then suddenly it all stalled. Work continued but rest of the opportunities to talk, collaborate, make closer bonds was not there anymore.

Leaders brainstormed and came to a conclusion of trusting employees and giving them the opportunity to work from home so that they can stay safe while continuing with their work responsibilities.

Any change if it’s being practised for long can become a habit but this habit helped us in discovering many aspects of future of work. It is full of noise about robots, changing technologies, hybrid working, continuous learning, flexible work timings, Gig workers, consultant model and the list goes on.

This is the time of experimentation & time for action too. we needs our global leaders to take a pause and think on a few questions:

  • How can we encourage workforce to practise continuous learning that will probably be required to continue working productively for a longer period of time?
  • As industry is evolving and converging because of AI how the job role will be changing and how frequently?
  • How organisation will be securing the culture when Full time employees, contract workers and gig co-exist with similar outcomes in the workplace
  • How do you work with GenZ employees and meet their expectations?
  • How in Hybrid/WFH we will integrate organisation values to workforce ?
  • How the performance evaluation process will be done if the work will be changing frequently?

Right now, the nature of work is drastically changing due to the development of technology, shifting demography, and altering economic conditions, making future of work a part of this huge transformation. Also, it is putting an additional responsibility on the employer to make sure work that workplace and workforce are redesigned, updated as per the evolving demand.

It is definitely a time to focus on priorities and take action, be experimental and leverage this era to navigate the future of work.
