Healthcare Transformational Phase -1

A Blog Series on Healthcare Innovation Challenge

Healthcare has always been the lifeline for us, and the pandemic has made it more evident. At the same time, pandemic also showed us that we still have to go a long way to make these healthcare facilities reach every nook and corner of India. What we need is to raise the bar of Healthcare in India and the best way it can be done is through “innovation”. Innovation is a must to address the current challenges faced by this sector and that’s why programs like Healthcare Innovation Challenge (HIC) are needed to promote these innovations.

At the launch event of HIC 3, many experts talked about their perspective on the Healthcare sector and ways it can be excelled. There are 20 lakh beds in our country which translate to 1.5 bed per thousand of population, but the actual need is 3.5 beds per thousand people. The government has already announced a loan of INR 50,000 crore to support the hospital infrastructure, but a lack of interest has been observed by the ecosystem stakeholder towards it. Yes, it sounds surprising but that is the case. Major reasons for this lack of interest are:

  • Awareness: Announcements not reaching the right audience and need some better communication.
  • Lack of specialists/consultations in Tier 2/3 cities: Dearth of specialists in Tier 3 cities, no consultation providers in Tier 2 cities.

Some ways have been suggested to address Tier 2/3 cities issues:

  • Big hospital needs to set-up a 100-bed hospital in range of 50-100 kms so that the consultants from that big hospital can visit the nearby hospital 2-3 times a week
  • Setting up home health vertical

Now technology has a big role to play in solving Healthcare challenges. Technology adoption has been on rise in the Healthcare ecosystem. The Hospital management system is going through a transformation phase and they are now providing a comprehensive solution for connecting hospital systems, laboratory diagnostic, physicians, etc.

One-stop total patient care system is another transformational solution. This solution can help in hospital registration, booking an appointment with doctors, booking lab tests, diagnosis, treatment, prescription management, real-time monitoring etc.

Experts also focused upon key emergency situations like Cardiology, oncology and more. Another key focus area is the reduction of paperwork, prescription digitization etc. Areas like quick response to emergency situations, unite hospital management system through single interface and more can substantially impact the hospital automation.

Adding technology to the current solutions is also looked at as an opportunity by experts like If we add high-speed image acquisition, image processing, and deep learning to the current medical imaging system with spectral + high spatial information and create a solution for the medical industry, a lot of impact can be created. Many such automation can be done through technology intervention.

HIC1-2

Many corporates like Applied Materials have already pressed the peddle towards innovation and building an innovation playbook. They are adopting various strategies for AI implementation in the business. A strategic approach is required for AI implementation:

  • Building a more intelligent enterprise
  • Co-Creation
  • Common Process, Systems and Data
  • Partner Enablement
  • Demonstrate Value
  • Transform Decision Support @All Level
  • Agility and Time to Value
  • Be the Safest Choice
  • Knowledge Management
  • Keep the customer’s customer in mind

So, a lot is going on in the healthcare ecosystem, and technology intervention is a must in taking it to the next level.
