In its 2023 report, WHO emphasized the role of wearables in managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and hypertension, which are major contributors to global morbidity and mortality. The report highlighted that wearables could empower individuals to take control of their health by providing actionable insights based on continuous data.

A new study has found that wearable devices like smartwatches, which track physical activity, can help detect early signs of diseases such as COVID-19, heart conditions, and falls. Conducted by researchers from the University of South Australia and published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research mHealth and uHealth, the study reviewed 28 studies with over 1.2 million participants.

The findings show that smartwatches and activity trackers can correctly detect COVID-19 in 88 out of 100 cases, comparable to rapid screening tests.

Additionally, these devices were able to identify atrial fibrillation, a condition where the heart beats irregularly and faster than normal, in 87 out of 100 cases. Falls were detected with 82% accuracy using wearable technology.

HealthTech Startups Leading the Way

In addition to global tech giants, healthtech startups are making significant contributions to the wearable health space by developing devices tailored to specific health conditions. These startups are pushing the boundaries of personalized wellness and monitoring with innovative products.

Bonatra has introduced smart rings designed for continuous health monitoring, focusing on parameters such as heart rate variability (HRV), sleep, and activity levels. These rings are particularly useful for tracking long-term health trends and early detection of potential issues.

Muse Wearables has launched the Ring One, a smart ring that offers a comprehensive health monitoring experience. It tracks vitals such as blood oxygen levels, body temperature, and respiratory rate, providing users with insights into their overall health and well-being.

BramhAnsh Technologies has introduced Soonyam, a biofeedback wearable aimed at enhancing mental well-being. This device helps users manage stress and anxiety by providing real-time feedback on physiological parameters and guiding them through relaxation techniques.

Latest Wearables in the Healthcare Market

The past year has seen the launch of several innovative wearables aimed at enhancing health monitoring and personalized wellness. Globally, Apple continues to lead the market with its Apple Watch Series 9, which features advanced health sensors capable of monitoring blood oxygen levels, ECG, and detecting atrial fibrillation. In addition, the Fitbit Charge 5, launched by Google-owned Fitbit, offers features like stress management, heart health monitoring, and sleep tracking, making it a comprehensive health wearable.

In India, domestic brands such as Noise and boAt have gained significant market share with affordable yet feature-rich devices. Noise recently launched the NoiseFit Evolve 4, which includes SpO2 monitoring, heart rate tracking, and sleep analysis, catering to the growing demand for affordable health monitoring solutions. Meanwhile, boAt introduced the boAt Watch Xtend, which offers multiple sports modes, stress monitoring, and menstrual cycle tracking.

Another noteworthy launch is the GOQii Smart Vital Plus, an Indian wearable that includes temperature monitoring, blood pressure tracking, women's care, and even a pulse oximeter, making it a comprehensive health wearable designed for the Indian market. This device has gained popularity for its focus on holistic health and wellness.

Into the Future

The future of health wearables looks promising, with ongoing advancements in sensor technology, AI, and machine learning. These innovations are expected to make wearables even more accurate, reliable, and capable of providing personalized health insights.

Originally designed for fitness tracking, including monitoring exercise, wearable devices now provide data on blood pressure, heart rate, sleep quality, skin temperature, and stress levels. Many also offer features like menstrual cycle tracking, with temperature sensors helping predict periods and ovulation.

Furthermore, the integration of wearables with telemedicine platforms could revolutionize healthcare delivery by enabling remote monitoring and consultations.
