The cloud is quickly becoming the essential foundation that enables enterprises to take advantage of today’s advanced technologies — such as big data analytics, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence/machine learning — and position themselves for the new innovations of tomorrow. This realization is accelerating the widespread adoption of cloud as the world embraces the transformative powers of digital technology.

True business success, today and tomorrow, requires a broad understanding of all the core technologies that are integral to the digital economy. It’s obvious that cloud is a critical technology skill for today’s world. Therefore, an understanding of the practical application of cloud and related technologies must be an integral part of STEM education so that the next generation of technologists are well-equipped with the skills required to take advantage of the cloud’s power and potential.

When I started my career in technology, the path to success was clear: If you knew a technology inside out – how it worked, how to implement it, how to keep it running successfully – you could do very well as a software IT professional in any enterprise scenario. But while technological know-how is and will remain important in today’s rapidly evolving digital world, it’s not the main component of success. Today, we must all look at business and organizational challenges from a different lens. Real success will come from building agile, resilient enterprises that can profit from the future.

That means a couple of things. First, it means erasing – or at least blurring – the distinction between IT and business/enterprise functions. In today’s world, every function has a technology component, and every enterprise is, at some level, a technology enterprise. Second, it means that technologists must have a broad, holistic perspective and an equally broad and holistic skillset.

This new kind of technology professional will be central to the fundamental challenges of every enterprise in today’s world: the need to be competitive and to differentiate with unique value propositions in a world where switching costs are a diminishing factor. But this new kind of technology professional will also be central to taking full advantage of the opportunities afforded by the digital era: the ability to create newer revenue streams and entirely new businesses in ways that were impossible just 10 years ago.

Investment in talent and supporting innovation are central to nurture the development of this new kind of technology.  These investments pay dividends as they will be integral to our clients’ success as well as our own.

As the world continues to be shaped by ever-changing technology, the right focus and investments on skill development are therefore key to help our ecosystem embrace these technologies and turn their potential into results.
