The Edtech Story

A blog series by NASSCOM covering in-depth analysis of the Edtech Sector during COVID-19

#8 Edtech Story: The New Normal for Education

If we closely analyze the most impacted area after the inception of COVID-19, the answer is student education. From school/colleges to coaching institutes everything is closed and forcing them to study online.

The simple everyday routine of a student has changed drastically which has also lead to a transformation in the education sector itself. So what has changed?

Outgoing:

  • Smart Classrooms: Focus on creating smart classrooms was on a rise until COVID-19. Presently this initiative has taken a back seat at least till the time schools open.
  • Coaching Institutes: Physical coaching institutes which not only help students in their regular syllabus but also prepare them for various competitive examinations have also been hit by the pandemic

Additions:

1) Online platforms: Schools and colleges conduct their classes on various online platforms like Google classroom, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Cisco WebEx, WhatsApp, and more. These platforms have become a lifeline for academic institutions and they are opting for either paid or free version of these platforms.

2) Tutoring: Due to COVID-19 all the coaching institutes had to close down leading to the emergence of online coaching centers. This new set of players in the landscape will act as competition to current online big Edtech firms. The trust built by coaching institutes over a period of time will be difficult to replicate and could be a game-changer in this business.

COVID-19 has not just led to the movement of education online but it has also transformed it completely. The idea of smart classes has suddenly vanished and now we talk only about online platforms. Coaching institutes were like a 2nd school for many, that culture has also lost its credence. These shifts are offering new experiences for students as well as opening up new opportunities for Edtech players.

Globally too the shifts visible are similar, however, countries have taken various innovative steps to make basic education available to everyone. Some of the unique ideas which have been adopted by countries are given below:

Television and Radio Broadcasting

Many countries are telecasting educational content on national television due to its high penetration. Teachers also organize classes for early age students. It has become a widely accepted way to take education to the masses in the COVID era.

Online Platforms / Websites

Countries upload their educational content on websites and various platforms for easy access for students all over.

The above measures though appear simple, implementing them at a country level is a major task which is being done by many countries. In the image above you can see some of the unique Edtech practices adopted by countries globally.
