Women in Product – A Blog Series

Diversity Scenario in the Indian Software Product Ecosystem - 1

Women’s participation in the Indian tech industry has been a continuous topic of discussion for the past many years. Many thought papers, research and debate, have confirmed that women bring a unique perspective to business and can significantly contribute to its growth.

If we talk about women’s involvement in the Indian tech community, it has grown significantly over the years. We now have 36% female diversity in the Indian tech ecosystem i.e., nearly 1.8 million women currently employed in the tech workforce.

“Women in Products” has been a buzz in the past few years. Have you ever wondered why?  India is currently witnessing an evolution in the software product industry and the target is to help this industry grow from $9Bn to $30Bn by 2025. A digital talent pool that supports the product ecosystem's unprecedented growth is required to build India's narrative of # WorldClassfromIndia. There has been a healthy growth of digital talent and roles, but we need more to fill in the gaps. These gaps are what can be filled by increasing the participation of women in this area.

NASSCOM recently published a study on the software product ecosystem in India covering latest the industry landscape, trends and outlook. In this report also covered an analysis of the role of women in the software product ecosystem. Some interesting insights covered include:

  • In the overall software product ecosystem, women account for 15-20% of the workforce

If we talk about the gender diversity by teams/functions within product firms, the numbers reflect a different story.

  • Diversity in engineering teams - 8-12%
  • Diversity in the product management team - 18-22%
  • Diversity in customer success/sales & marketing - 20-24%

This data reflects the need for increasing the penetration of women  and for that it is imperative to create a strong and focussed strategy.

There is a lot of work to be done to increase diversity in the products industry for this there has to be proper planning and strategizing. Who better to do the job than a group of women? So, to brainstorm around the participation of women in the product industry, NASSCOM organised a roundtable on "Women in Products – Opportunities and Challenges" on 8th September in Bangalore where we had women representation from entrepreneurs, investors, and the corporate community. The idea behind this roundtable was to discuss and understand what, why, and how of women's participation in the software products sector. In our next blog we will discuss some of the interesting points covered in the roundtable.
