We, along with SERI, organised a webinar on IT Assets Disposal (ITAD) data vulnerability, data erasing process and global best practices on June 24, 2025.  This was the second webinar on the issue. In the 1st webinar, SERI provided insights on e-Waste Management Rules, 2022 and there was detailed discussion regarding collection and processing of e-waste only by registered producers, recyclers and refurbishers.

To carry forward from the last webinar, Dr. Sandip Chatterjee, Senior Advisor, SERI, discussed how Data losses can be catastrophic for any IT businesses, impacting every aspect of their business. Data loss is critical and having far-reaching consequences across operational, financial, legal, and reputational dimensions. Information Technology Assets Disposal (ITAD) is a regular process for any ICT businesses and data loss may occur at the time disposition of IT assets.

As we are aware, ICT companies are bound by laws mandated to secure data storage & handling, confidentiality, obligations and reliability. Loss of data on IPs, designs, codebases, or algorithms can erode the competitive advantage of a company.

ITAD is a professional service and important for all the IT companies and bulk consumers to ensure their data destruction or proper wiping before the product can have a second life. Loss of sensitive data attracts regulatory fines & penalties global data protection rules like (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA violations). The matter is relevant in India as well after enacting of Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA), 2023.

While choosing ITAD vendors for recycling or refurbishing services, what ICT companies should keep in their mind on safeguarding their data such as (i) method of data erasing carried out, (ii) global best practices for ITAD, (iii) national and international legal ramifications if breaches occurred (iv) major incidents on data breaches due to improper ITAD process, (v) the international standards on data sanitisation.

Sustainability of electronics is the key focus for future business. The longer life of the products ensures sustainability and that necessitates proper standardised data sanitization. Globally, it is estimated that 60% of the data breaches happen at the third-party users, because of improper data sanitisation before disposal of the IT assets.

Learning global best practices on this matter including how data erasing and sanitisation being carried out professionally would be important to adhere to national and international legal framework is crucial for ICT companies so that they can ensure credibility, transparency, and commitment for their clients.
