The rapid advancement in IT/ITES sector has led to an increased dependence on electronic devices across sectors. In India, the IT sector has seen exponential growth, which has resulted in a surge of electronic waste, or e-waste, posing significant environmental and health hazards. Key factors contributing to the growing e-waste problem include rapid technological advancements, consumer demands and lack of recycling infrastructure.

The Government of India had notified E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, which was revised and notified in November 2022 (E-Waste Management Rules, 2022) and the same is in force since April 1, 2023. While the Rules are being implemented by the industry, there are various issues related to IT assets disposal and environmentally sustainable disposal. Many companies are also delving on vulnerability in data breaches during disposal and global best practices and standards being followed.

We, along SERI organised a webinar on Rules and guidelines on E-waste management and global best practices on April 30, 2025. During the webinar, Dr. Sandip Chatterjee, Senior Advisor, SERI provided insights on e-Waste Management Rules, 2022 and there was detailed discussion regarding collection and processing of e-waste only by registered producers, recyclers and refurbishers. The participants also discussed global best practices and how to deal with refurbished IT assets, data vulnerability, necessary data sanitisation, international standards and practices.

With nearly 90 engaged participants, our latest webinar turned the spotlight on a pressing challenge shadowing India’s digital ascent: electronic waste. As AI, 5G, and IoT push the ICT sector to new heights, the remnants of outdated devices and discarded hardware accumulate, silently escalating environmental and health risks.

the session moved beyond surface-level awareness, diving into global and national regulations, the power of EPR, the need for certified data disposal, and why India must now step up as a serious contender in the global circular economy.

This is more than a compliance conversation. It’s a call to lead responsibly. As India eyes its place in global tech leadership, how it manages its e-waste could define its legacy. For more details about the discussions, during the webinar, the link of the recording of the webinar is available here.
