“Think of digital transformation less as a technology project to be finished than as a state of perpetual agility, always ready to evolve for whatever customers want next, and you’ll be pointed down the right path.”

— Amit Zavery, VP and Head of Platform, Google Cloud

This is the eleventh of the multi-part blog series titled ‘DIGITAL ENTERPRISE TRANSFORMATION, INDIA PARADIGM’ and encapsulates the theme of the flagship NASSCOM-Avasant Digital Maturity Index, covering three broad dimensions, namely, Digital Strategy and Investments, Technology Adoption, and Digital Talent, and fourteen primary parameters that constitute the Index.

The Index outlines the five maturity categories – Beginners, Followers, Strivers, Accelerators, and Transformers defined on a scale of 1 to 5, in ascending order from least to most mature, with Transformers being on the higher end of the digital maturity spectrum.

My former blogs focused on the various aspects of Digital Enterprise Transformation such as STATE OF TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION, DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION CONTRACTS AND OUTSOURCING TRENDS, WORKFLOW DISTRIBUTION ON CLOUD & TRADITIONAL DATA CENTERS (DCS), BUSINESS PROCESS DIGITALIZATION, DIGITAL TALENT STRATEGY, and HYBRID WORK MODELS from the standpoint of Indian end-user enterprises and set the context for my present and upcoming blogs, highlighting the key takeaways on digital enterprise maturity for Indian tech-adopter side companies. These insights have been culled out from the NASSCOM-Avasant “Digital Enterprise Survey” conducted in May’2022. Based on the survey results, NASSCOM and Avasant constructed the “The Digital Enterprise Maturity Index,” which forms a key ingredient of the “DIGITAL ENTERPRISE MATURITY 3.0: Boosting Business Resilience through Technology” Report published in July 2022.

KEY INSIGHTS ON DIGITAL MATURITY LANDSCAPE OF INDIAN ENTERPRISES (1/2):

  1. Overall, amongst enterprises classified as Transformers in line with the survey results, 60% are global and 40% are Indian.

2. In India, a greater number of Transformers are large enterprises (~67%) as compared to ~58% large enterprises globally. Further, ~54% of Accelerators in India are mid-size firms indicating the rapid pace of digitalization among these firms. All the firms classified as Beginners are small-sized firms. Globally, however, ~42% of the Transformers are midsize firms and Beginners are a 70:30 mix of Small: Mid-size enterprises.

In my forthcoming blogs, we will assess some more key trends focusing on different aspects of digital maturity with respect to Indian end-user organizations.
