Indian Deep tech start-ups focusing on Innovation

In my last blog “India making a bigger mark on the global IP stage”, we talked about the key patent filing trends in India.

Moving forward on the discussion lets discuss what have been the patent filing trends across the deeptech ecosystem in India.

In the report there have been an analysis of patent filed by over 360 deeptech start-ups in India. Notably, these start-ups have filed 900+ patents since 2008. Notably, of all these patents 75% originated in India while the remaining were first filed in the US, highlighting the interest of Indian Deep Tech start ups in the country.

Some of the key reasons for the same includes:

  • Higher grant ratio - 53% of the patents filed in the US have been granted while only 35% have been granted in India
  • Lower grant time - The average patent grant time is ~2X lower in USA
  • Funding Advantage - Investors in USA give more weightage to patents, making it an added advantage
  • Advanced Market - In terms of experimenting with the new DeepTech technologies, US is more advanced making it a key market for new inventions.

Chennai patent office accounts for ~ 70% of the India origin filings by DeepTech start-ups,

In India an applicant or first mentioned applicant in case of joint applicants can file application for patent at the appropriate Patent Office (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) under whose territorial jurisdiction he/she normally resides or has his domicile or has a place of business or the place from where the invention actually originated.

Incase of deeptech start-ups Chennai leads with 7 out of 10 deep tech patents being filed there. This is probably driven by the fact that 25-30% of the Deeptech start-ups are based out of

Bengaluru, and Chennai is the filing office mapped to Bengaluru.

Deeptech startups majorly focused on AI and Healthcare

Another trend that came to the fore was the focus on AI and Healthcare for new innovations in the deeptech arena.

  • In terms of healthcare patents to medical imaging, diagnosing, report generation and testing were highlighted as the keep focus area
  • On technology side, sub technologies in AI including Image processing, NLP and Predictive modelling came up as the key focus areas, while Gen AI, Medical Data Processing and Cognitive computing emerged as the new focus areas.
