What’s reshaping the future of Jobs in the tech industry?

In my last blog post “WHAT’S IN STORE FOR FUTURE OF WORK?” I had highlighted the three pillars of Future of Work – The Job, The Workforce and The Workplace.

This morning the news talked about the Naukri Index which highlighted that “New jobs in artificial intelligence increased by 12% y-o-y in January 2024. Hiring for niche AI related roles such as machine learning engineer and full-stack AI scientist increased by 46% and 23% y-o-y, respectively. Conventional AI roles are in good demand. This is despite the fact that the overall hiring in the IT sector was 19% lower than the boom times of January 2023. Though, it was up 1% on a month on month basis. This gets us to our first pillar of FoW  - Future of Jobs.

The data above is reflected of the fact that digital technologies are empowering organizations by automating processes, augmenting manual labor in production, and simultaneously driving innovation.

According to nasscom’s report “Future of Work – Unravelling the Intricacies of New-Gen Work” three new fundamentals are emerging across the tech industry when we talk about Future of Jobs – Changing nature of Job, Expansion of Geographical footprint, Emergence of New Work Models.

Geographical Expansion is a prominent trend across technology organizations as they continue to explore new markets and foster strategic partnerships. With talent availability remaining a key challenge organizations are focusing their expansion efforts to tier 2 and tier 3 cities with an intent to leverage cost efficiencies and diverse skill sets.

Also, need for stronger cultural connections is driving organizations on getting employees to operate from offices with more than 80% of the tech organizations operating 2 days or more from office in a week. As hybrid work models continue to be the preferred way of working companies are investing across a range of technologies to enhance productivity.

On the other hand, the industry is witnessing an emergence of new roles with the advent of new-age technologies including specialist role in specialist roles across data science, AI/ML, cloud, cyber security and full-stack development.

Moreover, with the fast evolving technical skills, professional competencies such as analytical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration are also increasingly seen as critical.
