Education is the foremost thing a country requires for its economic growth and prosperity. It empowers an individual to take right decision for their selves as well as towards betterment of society.

Primary level becomes the foundation for a good education and the prime focus should be towards strengthening the foundation. Primary or elementary education starts from easy age (6 years) and this is where foundation is laid. But is our primary education going in the right direction? We may say for the metro cities where we have better infrastructure, good teachers, reading materials etc. But rural primary education continues to face its own challenges and is still deprived of several basic facilities.

Major Differences in Urban and Rural Education:

Urban Rural
Less dropout ratesHigher dropout rates
Better salary offering for teachersLow salary for teachers with no incentives
Offers easy accessibility to schoolLimited no. of schools require long travels
Offers higher proportion of qualified teachersStruggle to provide qualified teachers

Primary education, between the age group of 6-10 years, is about educating almost over 130+ million population in various part of India. With major chunk of our population living in villages this seems to be a tedious task. If we go by the statistics in primary education (latest as per MHRD report):

  • 84 million primary schools in India
  • Gross Enrollment Ratio: 99.2
  • Pupil Techer Ratio: 23
  • Average Annual Drop-out: 4.13
  • Number of Recognized Educational Institutions (2015-16): 8,405

The statistics above may look acceptable but there is still a long way to achieve the satisfactory level of Primary education. Issues like infrastructure, quality of Teachers’, language barriers, connectivity and lack of study material continues to be the top problems faced by the Education sector and requires In-depth government intervention. Many state specific governments like Kerala, Gujarat and more have already started taking initiatives by offering school management system, creating digital content, biometric attendance and more.

The prime goal for the Education sector should be to evolve as Edtech ecosystem and use technology for enabling effective ways into the education system. Technology intervention in education not only ease the whole sector but it also offers better quality and better standards. Currently there are no. of technology based primary education offerings in the market like:

  • ICT based Classroom Training
  • Content Localization
  • Personalized App Based Learning
  • Test Preparation
  • Tutoring
  • Massive Open Online Courses etc.

And if you are wondering where did all these solutions came up, they are innovations by Start-ups in the Education sector! Start-ups like Conceptowl, Testbook, Gurug etc can play a very vital role in taking primary education to next level especially in rural areas. Edtech based start-ups, which scaled 7-folds in past 4-5 years can; not only provide easy access for education; but also lead to better ways of learning. Government and investors should come forward and support Edtech based start-ups who are working in different areas of education.

Journey for Edtech may not be easy but it is the only solution, currently, to tackle primary education challenges. Give it a thought and see what you feel about this?
