Far too long, West Bengal has borne the brunt of being critiqued for not providing sufficient global opportunities to entrepreneurs, particularly the ones who have adopted cutting edge technologies in their delivery model. It seems that the Bengal Government has decided to answer its critics boldly by setting up an Information Technology (IT) hub in New Town, near Kolkata, on the lines of the famed Silicon Valley in the USA. In fact, during a recent administrative meeting, the Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee had termed the hub, ‘Silicon Valley Asia’.

The hub will come up on 100 acres of land and will create many jobs to usher in an altogether new wave of global opportunities for the state of West Bengal. In more recent times, some of the most popular Indian IT companies have taken up huge tracts of land to set up development centres which are expected to be underway very soon. The state houses some of the top-tiered Engineering Colleges and continues to provide a hot-bed of niche talent. Many believe, STEM has made way for STEAM but the city is equally resourceful in its pool of Liberal Arts professionals, who are ranked amongst the brightest of the land.

On the 13th of August, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, laid the foundation stone of the hub to come up over 100 acres of land at New Town, Kolkata. The President of NASSCOM, Ms. Debjani Ghosh was present and said, “NASSCOM will work with Government and industry across India, to enable three things: innovation, skills and an ecosystem for fostering new opportunities in business.”  She also announced the NASSCOM International SME Conclave (NISC) which will be held in Kolkata on 10th and 11th January 2019.

Exciting times ahead for East.
