India’s new codified labour law – The Code on Wages, 2019 (“Code on Wages”) has been approved by both the Houses of the Parliament and received Presidential assent on August 8, 2019. The Code on Wages now merely awaits its effective date, which will be notified by the Government separately.
Once the effective date of the Code on Wages is notified, it shall subsume and repeal four important labour laws in India: (1) The Payment of Wages Act, 1936; (2) The Minimum Wages Act, 1948; (3) The Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 and (4) The Equal Remuneration Act, 1976.
Given the potential impact of the Code on the employers, NASSCOM in association with Nishith Desai Associates, organized a webinar on 10th September 2019 on the Code on Wages 2019. The purpose of the webinar was to create awareness and discuss the key provisions of the Code on Wages and how it impacts the IT companies in India.
