The world has undergone a significant transformation in the last decade. Today, we live in a world where an X-Ray machine can tell about our body in a few seconds, AI bots can resolve customer issues, and we can also travel in self-driving cars. All of this has been possible by automation.

What is Automation?

Automation can be defined as the process of making a machine/procedure/system work without or little interference of humans. It is changing the business landscape around the world. Recently Mckinsey reported that by 2030, 30% of current jobs will be automated around the globe. While in India, this number will be between 9 – 13%.

The report further mentions that automation can be a boon for early adopters, while it can become a bane for the organization that are late adopters. It is also possible that late adopters may never be able to overcome the competitive advantages of automation early adopters.

The Boon of Automation

  • Automation of various business processes increases efficiency and effectiveness besides reducing the processing time.
  • HR automation is one of the trending automation topics. It is trending as it simplifies the hiring process. Moreover, HR automation enables the organization to select the right candidate without needing to go through all candidates.
  • Analysis plays a vital role in mapping the growth of an organization. Automation makes analysis easy by making insight from data and generating meaningful reports. Besides, sorting huge volumes of data as per the need is a matter of a few clicks and seconds. This has eliminated the process that would usually require months of training and days of work.
  • The primary advantage of automation is cost-efficiency. It reduces the time and money utilization on a process reducing the possibility of errors, rectification and reparations.

The Bane of Automation

  • Automation is about data understanding and utilization. But, data cannot be completely secured, it can be hacked, and manipulated. If these happen, it can lead to financial and legal repercussions. Since, the company owning the data is liable for its security. Even, the possibility of data loss also exists. If the complete data of a company is lost, then it may affect the growth of the company and can take it behind years.
  • The data used for automation is inserted by developers and end-users. They are human. So there always remains the possibility of entry errors. This leads to false information, and it can drive nil or ineffective results.
  • Automation if done at industrial or large scale business level requires a massive amount of initial investment. Moreover, investment is also necessary to train the workforce to utilize automated products and processes.
  • The dependency on automation reduces the reliability of human resources. This possesses a risk to the HR foundation in organizations. Moreover, reduced social interaction can affect the mindset of human resources.

Automation and jobs

Automation provides both boon and bane to our future generations when it comes to jobs. Machines being able to do tasks much efficiently and in reduced time will lead to unemployment. Moreover, since automation can deliver results with some clicks alone, it can reduce the ability of critical thinking and creativity.

Coming to the boon of automation, it may reduce some job opportunities, but it also creates many new roles. These roles are necessary for yielding successful results from automation.

The Takeaway

Automation comes with both advantages and disadvantages. However, the benefits that automation offers overshadow disadvantages. Automation can bring growth to our economy, and create new opportunities for our future generations.

Being an early adopter of automation is beneficial for organisations, but they need to meticulously plan it. If not planned properly, automation can lead to job losses. To avoid it, companies need to organize training and up-gradation programs for their employees. This ensures that they can create an alternate line of work for their employees, without having to fire them. Organizations need to adopt automation by investing in the right technologies and resources simultaneously, to secure a brighter future.
