In my last blog the I started the discussion on the top ten key trends of global patent filing. Taking that further the next three key trends that were the key highlight for 2021 includes:

  1. In the last blog we saw China as the top destination for patent filing, which in turn has led to Asia emerging as the top continent accounting for over two-third of the global patent filing.

  1. Though China leads in terms of overall patent filing, US led with nearly 250 thousand patents by its residents being filed abroad in 2021

  1. One important factor that stands out in this year’s report is that though the number of patent applications has witnessed continuous increase, the number of applications for unique inventions dropped significantly in 2019 (last reported year), which highlights that the same application is being filed across various jurisdictions rather than new inventions that are being filed as the key driver

In 2019, patent families worldwide declined by 7.5% in 2019 - the sharpest year-on-year drop since at least 1980, with a 9.9% decline in patent applications in China in 2019 being the key driver.

  • Notably, ~85% of the patent families created worldwide between 2017 and 2019 were filed at a single office.
  • This high share in turn is primarily driven by the filing behaviour of Chinese applicants who are mostly inclined to file applications at a single office.
  • Thus this means – most unique inventions come from China, we can say that however there is a catch that there is a three year lag which in the patent family data filed by WIPO. But considering the quantum China is driving in global IP filing this could be the case.

Stay tuned for more trends in my next blog, also wait for more India specific patent data and issues in NASSCOM’s report on emerging technologies patent on this World IP day.
