In recent years, India's Global Capability Centers (GCCs) have undergone a seismic shift, transforming from mere cost arbitrage hubs to strategic innovation powerhouses. With over 1,760 GCCs employing nearly 2 million professionals, India has emerged as a global destination for organizations seeking talent, scale, and agility.

The Rise of GCCs

GCCs are rapidly expanding across sectors, from BFSI to manufacturing, healthcare to hospitality, and their influence on global business is growing stronger. But what fuels their rise? The answer lies in a unique combination of talent, technology, and collaboration.

To understand what is driving innovation in GCCs in India today, we analyzed the 2025 Nasscom GCC awards. The Nasscom GCC Awards have become a benchmark for excellence and innovation within India's thriving GCC ecosystem, with over 200 entries from more than 90 unique participants.

Pillars of Innovation for GCCs in India:

Upon close analysis , the innovation landscape of GCCs in India can be categorized into three key pillars:

1. Technology-Driven Innovation

Indian GCCs are no longer just back-office support functions; they are innovation powerhouses creating products and solutions that impact global markets. Their focus spans Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, Cloud Computing, and more. For instance:

- Bosch's GCC focuses on IoT and connected mobility solutions, developing smart vehicle technologies and predictive maintenance solutions.

- JP Morgan's GCC is a fintech innovation hub that develops AI-driven risk analytics and blockchain-based trade finance solutions.

- Lowe's India has transformed retail through computer vision technologies that enhance customer experiences at scale.

These GCCs invest heavily in R&D, often filing patents and publishing research, positioning India as a global innovation hub.

2. Collaboration and Ecosystem Integration

Innovation thrives in ecosystems. GCCs in India actively engage with startups, academic institutions, and industry associations to co-create solutions and accelerate innovation cycles. For example:

- Citi's GCC runs multiple innovation labs that collaborate with fintech startups to develop blockchain-based payment systems and AI-driven credit risk models.

- NICE processes millions of customer interactions daily through platforms built with strategic startup partnerships.

- Broadridge Financial Services' Studio 605 creates a protected innovation space where startups and GCC teams can co-create without bureaucratic friction.

This collaborative approach enables GCCs to combine their scale and resources with startup agility, resulting in faster go-to-market cycles and disruptive solutions.

3. Talent and Leadership Development

The backbone of GCC innovation is India's vast and skilled talent pool. GCCs invest heavily in upskilling, leadership development, and creating career pathways to retain and grow talent. For instance:

- HSBC focuses on cybersecurity and digital banking innovation, supported by structured mentorship and certifications.

- AstraZeneca integrates innovation across IT, R&D, and business units, ensuring startup collaboration solves mission-critical challenges.

Many GCCs co-develop curricula with universities, offer internships, and sponsor research chairs to ensure a steady pipeline of talent aligned with industry needs.

The Future of GCC Innovation

As GCCs continue to scale up their innovation capabilities, India's role in shaping the future of global technology and business will only deepen. The next frontier for GCC innovation in India is likely to be business model and ecosystem innovation, where GCCs will reimagine how value is created and delivered within their organizations and across global markets.

India's GCCs are revolutionizing innovation, driving digital transformation, and cutting-edge technology development for global organizations. With their unique combination of talent, technology, and collaboration, GCCs are poised to shape the future of global business and technology. As the innovation landscape continues to evolve, India's GCCs will remain at the forefront, driving growth, innovation, and impact.
