In Q4 CY2023, 30% of the new GCCs set up in India were from the semiconductor vertical. Globally, the semiconductor talent stands at approx. ~2.3 Mn+, out of which, US, China, and India collectively contribute ~50% of the overall semiconductor talent.

In recent times, the govt, industry, and academia are all working together to foster indigenous semiconductor production in the country. Companies across the world are viewing India as a strategic partner due to the country’s strategic focus on talent development and investment in semiconductor manufacturing, further propelled by initiatives such as India Semiconductor Mission.

As of FY2023, there are overall 55+ semiconductor GCCs, with over 95 centres and over 50,000 semiconductor talent, in India. A vast majority of these GCC units are present in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, collectively accounting for over 2/3rd of the semiconductor GCCs in India. These two cities also house over 80% of the semiconductor talent in India as well. Other key locations include NCR, Pune, and Chennai.

While analysing the value chain in India to understand the capabilities across the workflows, Indian semiconductor GCCs are excelling in the design tests and system integration workloads.

India boasts of a high number of semiconductor design engineers, and this is showcased by the country’s prowess in areas such as functional testing, simulation, emulation, physical verification in design testing phase and firmware integration, driver development, post silicon validation etc in system integration phase.

In addition, some prominent job roles across the semiconductor value chain includes AISC design engineer, analog/mixed signal design engineer, IP core developer etc. in the wafer design stage, IC validation engineer, quality assurance analyst etc. in design testing stage, package design engineer, chip encapsulation specialist etc. in QA, testing, assembly and packaging stage, among others.
