As we venture into the new year and look back upon our pandemic ridden 2020 workforce experiences some things stand out as tectonic shifts in the world of Workforce.

Remote Working has been the New Normal for most of last year. Organizations have realized that acknowledging, adapting and even embracing alternate method of working was important for short term survival and long-term development. The building blocks of the organization – its employees also felt taken care of in a unprecedented and volatile environment. So even if remote working will slowly lose its novelty and migrate to work from anywhere or hybrid work model the work dynamics has changed during the Pandemic and some of the changes are here to stay.

We surveyed workforce to understand what they considered as some of the perks of remote working and found the following results.

Safety: Safety of self and family was of utmost importance in a time when people preferred to stay with their loved ones in an unpredictable environment. Organizations understood this need early on and continue to do so keeping employee well-being as top priority and realigning organizational goals that can be strived in the new normal. Workforce felt assured and comfortable in a setting where they had control of exposure to the virus while working from the safety of their homes. Work from home soon metamorphized into work from anywhere with workforce moving back to their hometowns or even experimenting with workations

No Commuting Hassle: Majority of the workforce were relieved to rid the hours spent travelling to Office Location. Employees who had to travel 2-3 hours a day to combat traffic snarls to and back from work heaved a sigh of relief knowing they can utilize that time in a far more productive manner. It gave the much-coveted flexibility to employees who thrived on autonomy and freedom to complete tasks to meet deadlines. Commute time either became productive work time or time to engage in personal interests. Once the workforce got used to the rhythm of remote working they could slot the time and manage it better leading to efficient outcome.

Greater Focus: A topic much debated over the last few months on whether remote working aided better focus leading to higher productivity. So, while time was saved on commute, water cooler conversations, tea-breaks or lunchbreaks, question remains where and how was that time best utilized in a remote working set up. While some segment of the workforce has sworn by the productive nature of Remote working, others might struggle to focus amidst the blurring lines of work and home environment in the beginning of the New Normal. Now that the workforce has adapted and embraced the new normal, they have found ways to work around it and make the best use of time saved on commute and other office distractions while channelizing this available time into a productive activity or personal time. Either of which boost productivity!
