In my last blog we continued the discussion on the top ten key trends of global patent filing, which highlighted the Asia and China leadership. Taking that discussion further the next three key trends that were the key highlight for 2020 and 2021:

  1. In terms of key technologies - computer technology led accounting for one-tenth of patent applications published worldwide in 2020.
  • It was followed by electrical machinery, measurement, digital communication and medical technology. These five fields have continued to occupy the top five spots in the ranking since 2012 – albeit in a varying order.
  • Globally, these five fields accounted for a total of 32.6% of all published applications in 2020, which is an increase of five percentage points compared to a decade earlier in 2010.
